I think I was well into my 30s before I even gave much thought to American Thanksgiving or registered that it was in a Thursday and their whole country had an unofficial extra-long weekend.
That was around the first time I heard the phrase “Black Friday”.

the people whose opinions I want are those who have lived in countries under the transition to authoritarianism, and I have not met one who is confused about what is going on in the US right now. If you teach history at Penn and don’t understand that, it’s time to quit.

The correct path to a just peace in Ukraine is, and can only be, the destruction of the Russian armed forces on the battlefield, sufficient to end Putinist rule in Russia itself. Every day the West dodges that realization is another day of wasted lives in Ukraine.
