Reading Richard Aldous’s brilliant account of Gladstone and Disraeli’s rivalry, The Lion and the Unicorn, I encounter for the first time Gladstone’s stupendously awful proposal of marriage to his future wife Catherine Glynne. She actually said yes to this rubbish.
