it has been almost 10 years of “America is too polarized!! we have to reach across the aisle to these people” and imma be real, if anything i’m less tolerant of actual trump supporters today than I have ever been lol

My gosh. Alex Pretti was notifying neighbors that Trump and Vance's agents were chasing a family. A mob of agents then tackled him and broke his rib.

He thought he was going to die.

Then the very next week, he came back out to support his neighbors.

And a mob of agents killed him.

now - especially now - a reminder that we are going to win. and this is why
I attempted to go to an ICE patrol training here in LA this morning and they had to turn most of us away because of capacity issues and even as I was leaving I saw a ton more folks showing up

so that’s how well their attempts to scare everyone away are going, even in the face of murder

What is wild to me is the defense, BY THE NEURIPS BOARD, that fabricated citations do not mean "the content of the papers themselves [is] necessarily invalidated"

It does. It very much does. What do you think citing other work is for? What do you think writing a paper is for? What do you *think*?

respect for the academic enterprise constitutively involves being disdainful of bad arguments. literally the whole point is to distinguish good arguments from bad arguments
I want to address my friend Ilan who says here that he has been subject to “a lot of hate” from academics who “should know better” and haven’t respected the “academic enterprise.”

I don’t dislike Ilan. I also think his paper is fundamentally wrong and not scholarly.

This is reminiscent of how collecting demographic data in order to test for fairness increases legal risk for banks, so they'd rather not collect it and instead try to guess your demographics in various ways.
I have an op-ed in the NYT today about the Grok scandal, sharing my research from last year finding that legal risk hinders AI companies from making their models safer against CSAM - an echo of the years where white-hat hackers were chilled from good-faith research. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/12/o...

if you work on "AI" and are concerned with social issues, you should apply to be the new director of the Tufts AI Institute: apply.interfolio.com/178311 (Need to be tenureable in one of our engineering departments, but it's explicitly open to people who work on human-oriented stuff.)

Driverless cars are very ineffective at getting bad drivers off the road. Multiple studies have shown that TNCs are mainly replacing public transit, walking, and biking trips — not human drivers.

I didn’t read as many books in 2025 as I did in 2024 but they were mostly older and slightly more “challenging” (in terms of my reading pace). my favorites were the house of mirth and Giovanni’s room
im recommitting myself to literacy in 2025. ive had it with video essays, podcasts, twitter/bluesky/threads threads, I barely care for blogs anymore, even the substacks of good writers are borderline (full of typos), i am going to be consuming proper TEXTS!!!!
