I haven't read this book, but I feel like this summary gives Maurice a *bit* too much of a pass on his hubristic assumption that isolation at sea was a good thing.
The cover of A Marriage at Sea, by Sophie Elmhirst, includes this summary: In 1972, Maurice and Maralyn Bailey left their home in Great Britain and embarked on a sailing boat for New Zealand, despite having no prior sailing experience. Seeing the trip as a grand adventure, Maurice refused to bring a radio, intending to remain isolated from the world while they traveled. As a result, when a whale sank their boat, the couple had no way to call for help — and they spent the next 117 days fighting for survival. Journalist Sophie Elmhirst tells their story in this New York Times bestseller that Elle deems “such an emotionally vivid portrait of a couple in isolation that I was shocked it wasn’t fiction.” It was also named one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of summer 2025!

Today, reporters noticed that the online United States Constitution, maintained by the Library of Congress, was missing parts of Article I, the part of the Constitution that lays out the rights and duties of Congress. Parts of Section 8 and all of Sections 9 and 10 were gone. Those include Congress’s control over the District of Columbia, Congress’s power to make the laws, the promise that habeas corpus would not be suspended, the stipulation that no money can be used by the government unless Congress has appropriated it, the requirement that no president can accept gifts from foreign countries, and the specification that only Congress can levy tariffs. Officials said the deletions were “due to a coding error,” and by the end of today the missing sections were restored.

I just read the DOJ guidance on "unlawful discrimination." The following recommendation is toward the end, and now I'm confused, because I thought 'inclusive' was not allowed...?

Random Q: Wouldn't this guidance seem to prohibit single-sex Greek orgs supported by gov't $$? Or am I misreading?
E. Recommendations on Best Practices Ensure inclusive access: All workplace programs, activities, and resources should be open to all qualified individuals, regardless of race, sex, or other protected characteristics. Avoid organizing groups or sessions that exclude participants based on protected traits. Some sex separation is necessary where biological differences implicate privacy, safety, or athletic opportunity.

The Chronicle sent out a reader survey today. Since I've been fuming about their editorial decisions a lot lately, I just went for it. Here's what I wrote in the final question box, soliciting thoughts I wanted to share with them. @chronicle.com
As I mentioned earlier, the editorial decisions of this current team are baffling to me. At least once a week, the Chronicle's choices infuriate me with the decision to publish such unhelpful (and sometimes actively harmful) opinion pieces that thwart educators' attempts to engage in meaningful and productive work in improving the learning on our campuses. As someone who works in a teaching center and who is strongly grounded in evidence-based practices, the opining of older, white, small-c conservative voices endlessly through the Chronicle is beyond frustrating. I have tried to submit things to the Chronicle for consideration multiple times (N>10), and every time it has been either utterly ignored. How? Why? I'm not a nobody; I have a national platform. Yet you don't seem to be interested in hearing from anyone except those you've already published. You don't seem interested in publishing things that meet the moment, instead giving valuable space to people who want to drag us back to the days of (as in the case of a piece last week) segregated public schools with desks neatly arranged in rows and instructors who prioritize speechifying and students who are silent. NO THANK YOU. This publication loses more of my respect daily.
