Maturity as a writer is realising that you can fix the problem of making sure a character death doesn't look like you're gratuitously fridging them by simply not gratuitously fridging the character in the first place.

It's looking like it'll be a good 60/70K when it's finished, which feels short for a novel, but it will be as long as it needs to be.
