Recap of Berkeley Middle Housing:

- Majority of the 102 public comments in favor

- City Council votes 9-0 to rezone most of the city's low density residential zones to 70 units per acre, ~8 homes per lot. Old zoning only allowed 1-2

Thank you to everyone who worked to make this happen! 🏘️

I feel like the potential scope of LLM impact requires us to reflect on how our systems are structured and what we want to them to provide for us. But from my perspective, those who have the privilege of time and influence are missing the forest for the trees.

I.e. it’s replicating the experience we have with TAs, advisors, experienced colleagues and mentors.

And I feel like this points to what is missing from our debates around the use of LLMs: what labor issues are we avoiding engaging with because of this new tool.

Which I think makes a certain amount of sense given that the LLM can be engaged with as a form peer review or critique which might prompt self-reflection and discovery through discussion.

I know they wrote this for a Harris administration setting, but the current bloodbath in public science funding only emphasizes the hollowness on this book’s messaging.

“Talking about science funding woes without talking about underfunding of America universities, and
the administrative bloat and deprofessionalisation that has come with neoliberal funding and student
debtification is notable to me.” Exactly.

Markets are not distributed computers algorithmically pricing neutral pieces of information and efficiently distributing risk on the basis of price. They are social, governed by convention, ruled by assumptions that work reasonably well in good times and catastrophically poorly in bad times.

This is my thought as well. I suspect as well that there are too few jobs to handle the supply of workers with applicable skills + increased cost of living and this just incentives maximizing number of applications sent.
