Just fyi: if you happen to find yourself roaming the halls of the Hyatt Regency in Seattle around 8:30 tomorrow morning, (I know, I didn’t pick the time 😭), feel free to drop by and check out my (early-stage) project on colleges and their effects on local school districts! #APPAM2025 #2025APPAM

Hi folks attending #2025APPAM #APPAM2025! Excited to see many of you in Seattle this week.

As usual, I am organizing a very informal happy hour for education policy folks at the conference to get together: Fri 11/14 starting at 6pm at Seattle Beer Co on Western Ave (~15 min walk from conference).

👋 I'm Danielle, and I'm on the #econjobmarket this year!

Let's start with a student describing her segregated school:

"The school felt temporary. Built like a warehouse with aluminum siding . . . I had a slipshod education"

The twist? The student is white, and her school is private.

Here's my thread of this year's new scholars in Economics of Education and Education Policy.

These PhD students and postdocs are on the job market, so take a look (and spread the word to others who might benefit from exposure).

And now onto the scholars... 👇

On net I like Bluesky, but the shift really lost grad students (far fewer active here vs. during peak EconTwitter). With job market season, it’s been kinda nice seeing familiar faces who were in the Covid grad school trenches w me popping up again recently

Like hey there! I remember you! Cool paper

Look obviously hell yea, down with fascism, but election nights like this are always mildly amusing with the number of poll nerd posts like

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME???”

and it’s a map of turnout from some tiny county in SW Virginia I’ve never heard of in my life

Glad to hear Dimmsdaleburg flipped!

Dawned on me that I was out of the country for the end of Daylight Saving Time, so I didn’t get the extra hour of sleep

So sorry, we’re gonna have to do it over. Everyone move your clocks forward an hour right now, and we’ll roll it back when I return. Lmk which day works best, I’m flexible

Update: It came together!

(That said, it’s 85 degrees in Cancún, and I’m in a black suit for a beach wedding, so new problems may arise soon)

My dad ties a perfect Windsor knot, has my whole life. So much so, I still have ties he tied in college that I’ve never undone and I’ve just been pulling over my head for years

Sadly I had to buy a new tie for a wedding, I’m in Mexico, so I’m on my own for this one. Wish me luck

Aging is noticing tv shows and songs today, on average, just aren’t as good as they were 20-30 years ago. Growth is accepting that most of those back then were crap, too

i think some in econ may not realise that there are international students, junior faculty, and other working economists who are scared to go in to work in chicago right now because of ICE. don't assume all is well because of your own narrow social circle. & ICE is now picking people up in evanston.

I think this is right. As someone who’s used it a lot/frequently trapped in Discourse, my experience

1.) Pretty helpful with (quant) research. More useful than doomers admit

2.) Not nearly as revolutionary as proponents push

3.) Many who find it useful greatly underestimate terrifying downsides
Idk, my position is kinda “it’s a useful tool that’s clearly here to stay but is also over hyped and has substantial negative externalities”
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

Ngl kinda hard to find concern with possible lead in my protein shakes when I’m propped up by so much coffee and energy drinks these days

Imma get this job market paper out and hit my bench PR one way or another, but know that my heart exploded in the process

Maybe it’s an aging thing, but man is it nice when the band you want to see is the opener. Easier parking, usually can get a good spot not too far from the stage, often can meet the band afterwards, and can get out before the end of show rush/before too late. What a concept!
