Layers of history. The C14th crypt of Holy Trinity, Bosham (birth town of Harold Godwinson) has rib vaults made of Caen stone. Now a chapel it may have originally been a charnel house.

I was reminded of the original purpose of the C14th Barker Tower in York when sunlight cast a chain like shadow across its facade. It's original purpose was defensive and it held a chain that stretched across the Ouse. There is a reference in 1380 of a 'Keeper of the Chain'.

Unlike many other medieval chapter houses, the ribbed vaulting of Southwell Minster's C13th chapter house doesn't have a central pier. It's vaulting hovers over the space like a starburst during first light. 📸 by me.
