A political philosopher on this platform posted a screenshot of a passage from A Theory of Justice by John Rawls. It think that's a good idea, and I'm going to start a pinned thread with quotes from the book.

I don't think the American military, in this era of instant GPS, mistakenly lands anywhere. This is a purposed affront to another nation's sovereignty and an act of cynical intimidation by some venal shitbirds who somehow are in command of our government.
DOD contractors “mistakenly” landed on a Mexican beach, declared it US property and planted “restricted area” DOD signs, triggering a tense confrontation with armed Mexican forces.

Mexico removed the signs, insisting the area is theirs.

Yet another example of total incompetence.
Pentagon Pete’s War Goons Accidentally Invade Mexico
U.S. “contractors” planted signs declaring that a Mexican beach was U.S. territory.

I've spent decades mulling over whether I think Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiaasen is the best creator of underworld characters. I lean toward Leonard, since Hiaasen has the advantage of focusing on Florida.

I'm absolutely cynical about the prospects for bringing about a just society by focusing on national politics. Despite my invariable vote for Democrats, I think the Democratic Party is a largely corrupted organization, as dependent on a flow of campaign cash and narcissistic spokespeople as the GOP

Nothing to see here. Just the White House needing to reassure the public that Piggy doesn't want to murder members of Congress. 😩

It was Miami Herald local reporter Julie Brown @jkbjournalist.bsky.social who actually covered the Epstein story and blew it wide open. She cared about the victims and Epstein's crimes, not access.
National outlets not only didn't, they refused to. They thought it was tawdry and beneath them.

Yesterday, a Republican tried to give me holy water and Trump perfume because I’m “demonic.”

Extremely normal stuff coming from an extremely normal party.

If you want a better slogan, go with defund or abolish. If you actually want the American body politic to address police reform and change some things, maybe not. Because that shit made political consensus impossible. But hey, sloganeering is fun.

1) Its own advocates conflated it. As soon as one supporter would arrive to assert that it was only a redirection of some assets, another would declare on the same thread that no it meant defund in full.
2) The slogan itself misleads. Which is why candidates and the political center fled en masse.

There is so much to target in reality: militarization of policing, the racism of the drug war, the need for civilian review of police violence, the reemphasis of targeting violence as job one. Instead, these dumb mooks cling to defund and abolish rhetoric as it it achieves anything.

There needs to be Nuremberg-style trials of the administration officials responsible for murdering people in boats in the Caribbean. This is being done in our name. Governments always commit atrocities, but these are out in the open, with not even a veneer of due process or declaration of war.

you could fact check this — there aren’t 30 million illegal immigrants and there is no evidence that the presence of an immigrant in say houston has any impact on housing in madison, wisconsin — or you could note straightforwardly that this is just nazi rhetoric
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

I've had my Chevy Bolt EV for a few months now, and I've never used a commercial DC fast-charging station or even a level 2 charger. My driving is limited to one county, so I just plug it in on my slow household current during overnight off-peak hours, at an estimated 2.2 cents per kWh.

I agree in total with the progressive Democrats here who state that the deal is awful, and will result in the collapse of the health care safety net.

I don't necessarily agree with what seems to be the dominant view of how it will play out among voters.

Tonight’s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength.

Instead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.

The American people need more from their leaders.
