James Talarico: Frankly I am tired of the ‘thoughts and prayers’ rhetoric from our leaders.

There is something profoundly cynical about asking God to solve a problem that we're not willing to solve ourselves.

The time for thoughts and prayers is over. It's time for us to act.

Regular reminder that the most dangerous thing most people do every day is get in a car, and it's something that is rarely talked about by the average person, let alone our politicians. This is an escalating problem, we can all see it, and there is very little political will to address it.
It’s important to contextualize just how much less safe American drivers are than everywhere else in the world, and it’s getting worse!

Phenomenal story and graphics, and a horrifying potential scenario. (My love/hate relationship with NYT continues.)

A plutonium-packed generator disappeared on one of the world’s highest mountains in a covert mission that the U.S. will not talk about.

If cost has kept you from picking up There Is No Place for Us (which is totally understandable), good news: the ebook is *$1.99* today—93% off!—on Kindle, B&N, Bookshop, and elsewhere.

So grateful to everyone who's been reading and sharing the book this year. It means a lot.

I think it’s also true that loneliness among women has historically been treated as an individual problem, while loneliness among men is treated as a societal problem. That, in turn, comes from an assumption that women are supposed to earn the company of others while men are entitled to it.
men’s loneliness gets “more airtime”?

baby I have lived the past three decades of my life witnessing corporate media elevate men’s loneliness into a full-blown balls-to-the-wall CRISIS once every 4-5 years

“more airtime” is hilarious

Also, congratulations everyone who made something this year. A comic, a song, a film, a novel, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, crochet, embroidery, whatever it is. In this era of slop and theft, if you *make* something you are a shining jewel and I am so grateful for you.

It's possible that Pluribus lost me with last week's big plot twist - just when it was getting interesting. TBD.

I think we're in some weird combination of post-pandemicness and Orange Man time where one year feels like at least eight. I'm just so tired.

I'm old enough to remember the protests songs of the 60s and 70s and if you're wondering who's picking up that torch, check out Jesse Welles. He was the talk of Farm Aid this year, for good reason. This is an amazing song.

not to grow, no hope
too frail not to bloom,
so reach for
what you are longing for,
no second guessing--
this is not about keeping a scale
balanced, but leaning toward,
setting doubt down
like a stone,
letting your heart leap,
no more what-ifs--
believe.

When a politician says: we’ll deregulate health insurance and send you a “freedom account” check, ask: freedom to buy what? If insurers don’t offer real policies or can cherry-pick only healthy people, that money is a coupon for a store that’s not open.
