“Hamnet” Feels Elemental, but Is It Just Highly Effective Grief Porn?
In Chloé Zhao’s film, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, the death of a child gives rise to the creation of a literary masterpiece.

For the @latimes.com, I reviewed REBUILDING, a film about trying to hold onto something after you’ve lost everything.
Review: Josh O'Connor, ever fascinating, continues to roam a lonesome range in 'Rebuilding'
A story singed by disaster in a way that might be triggering for Angelenos, Max Walker-Silverman’s drama handles the aftermath of a wildfire with sensitivity.

Netflix has Clint Bentley’s TRAIN DREAMS, a gorgeous new film starring an extraordinary Joel Edgerton, based on a novella by the late Denis Johnson. It’s sort of a tone poem to early America, to trees and trains and to grief. Watch it at night with the lights low and your phone put away.

Baum's away. The remarkably terrible WICKED: FOR GOOD, reviewed: www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Wicked: For Good” Is Very, Very Bad
In the second of two movies adapted from the Broadway musical, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo battle fascism, bigotry, and some fairly dreadful filmmaking.

Hi, meet your new favorite movie.

The action spectacular of the year stars a 66-year-old man in a speeding truck. “Sisu: Road to Revenge” declares its intention in the title — it’s a scrappy, indie translation of “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Review: Speed to the theater for 'Sisu: Road to Revenge,' Finland's madcap take on 'Fury Road'
Hollywood just hired Finnish director Jalmari Helander to reboot "Rambo" and this grisly, hilarious, full-throttle chase movie easily proves why.

No bleaker satire than making it through THE RUNNING MAN, past end credits of a raised fist with “Together Against the Network,” to see the words: A Skydance Corporation.

Or maybe there is, if someone makes a documentary about what Edgar Wright may have had to cut.

Review: Edgar Wright's 'The Running Man' limps into theaters too relevant to be any fun
Stephen King’s 1982 techno-dystopian novel no longer feels sci-fi, making this remake trip over its own feet. (It's still better than the Schwarzenegger version.)
