Remember being on a website and just as you’re about click on something, an ad loads causing you to click on something else? It seems like a solved problem now but I kind of miss it in a weird way.

It’s actually really impressive how hard Outlook tries to prevent you from formatting your email in a way that is visually pleasing

I was inspired to finally put my own site to use after sitting mostly dormant collecting dust.

I will be maintaining a running list of cool, niche websites. It might take on another form in the future as it expands, but for now it lives as the only blog post on the site:

With the state of the modern internet and where it's heading, what we need now more than ever is a resurgence of small, cool sites with extremely niche purposes.

Buttons like this are responsible for so many of my headaches at work. Please stop sending me specs and proposals with made-up features.
I swear Google keeps adding more and more AI nonsense whenever I open a document. I know how to write! Fuck you!

Just submitted my first serious PR to an open source project that isn't just documentation changes.

Nothing makes me feel more like I'm doing something wrong than when I post on the Kansas City subreddit. I've had many posts removed for stupid reasons, but today's was for "flooding the subreddit" by "posting more than once within a 24 hour period."

wife: how was guarding the two paths today, honey?

guard: [looking away] fine

wife: did something happen?

guard: [tearing up] no

wife: would the other guard tell me something happened?

An annoying and revealing thing about this is employers acting like their hands are tied and they now have to revert the policy they already implemented because this got repealed.

Nothing is stopping any employer from improving their benefits on their own. They don’t NEED to be legally compelled.
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

58% of Missourians stood up for the dignity of our workers, their health, and their families. Evaluating all we can do to support working people in our city and our state post repeal.

Despite my best efforts, at my place of work a lack of planning on your part often does, in fact, constitute an emergency on my part

Has anyone heard of any planning going on, public transit or otherwise, about the World Cup in KC next year? Does the City even remember it’s happening?

Maybe I’m too cynical, maybe they are too domain-specific, but In my experience they are clueless when you work on anything somewhat specialized without much online info.

I’m not going to force myself to use a tool that I have to beg for good output when I can just spend that time doing it myself.
LLMs are enough of an improvement to my workflows that i find people who call them useless really funny.
Yes they make mistakes, but so do i, and the loop to fixing those mistakes is shorter with their help.

My grandpa — proud keeper of a purple martin house — instilled in me a deep hatred for European starlings from a very young age.

To this day I dutifully chase them out of my yard when they dare to show their invasive faces around me.

I was decommissioning a rack at a data center and my boss offered me one of our old dell servers with pretty good specs for free and I turned it down because of the power draw. My old laptop does great work + has a built in UPS.
Apropos of nothing in particular, if any homelab enthusiasts are on here just felt like you should know that if your setup pulls 300W you're using a little more energy each week than my car does.

I mapped a button on my mouse that mutes my mic while it's held down. I did this to act as a cough button for when I'm on calls, and I've gotten so used to it that I find myself instinctively pressing it all the time when I'm not even on a call.

Idk if this is a hot take, but the Brits are right about putting the punctuation outside the quote marks when it makes sense to.

If it’s not part of the “quote”, it shouldn’t be in the “quote marks”.
