I'm told I'll seem more like a real person if I put something here
And that will make it less likely that I'll get blocked
But then I think about how strong the desire not to be perceived is
And I wonder why I'd want to avoid being blocked
I switched to another tab in frustration on this one SO many times. Frustrating in the best way.

Obviously this is a me problem, but this is the first I've heard of it. I actually thought I already had a functioning Bluetooth controller that I had just never bothered to connect to anything.

One thing I've noticed is that from time to time, my "require alt-text on all images" setting gets turned off. Maybe that's happened to you? If so, please turn it back on.

I guess it's a measure of how privileged I am that I didn't realize what a white Christian nationalist Clinton was.

And I was like, you know what, fine. See what you think of outside. Let him run out. Let the door close behind both of us. Before I even made it to the car, he was HOWLING at the front door, apparently panicked that he had lost access to the apartment forever. And he never tried to escape again.

I had a cat once who was DESPERATE to escape, like you had to warn guests before they left that they would need to use their feet to defeat the cat. Any time you opened the door, he was ready to make a break for it. After years of this nonsense, I was taking an armload of stuff to the car...

Montréal is the one place we visit where "when can we make it to these specific food places" is the foundation of our itinerary.
November 27, 2025 at 5:42 PM
Yeah, that's solid.
November 27, 2025 at 5:04 AM
Yeah, absolutely. I bought an M1 with 16GB and I still can't justify upgrading it, but if it were 8GB I'd have replaced it the moment the M4s came out.

This is the first time I've encountered the phrase. If I didn't have Internet access and I had to guess what to put on something called a relish tray, I guess I would put olives, gherkins, and capers on a sectioned tray? And some dill relish just to hedge my bets.

I have been dreading this moment. I hope the new year finds you well!

I have enthusiastically referred to myself as a Yankee ever since a NBT first told me that I would always be a Yankee even though I had no memories of the time before I moved to Texas at age five. That distaste for categorizing people based on things they have no control over has served me well.

I can only assume it's filkers.
November 26, 2025 at 10:44 PM
I came to the comments to write exactly that.
November 26, 2025 at 10:43 PM
Absolutely wild how I knew exactly what this was about without any context.
November 26, 2025 at 10:41 PM
It does! But also the fact that it treats it as a given that no one in the world has the basic understanding of the reality - excuse me, "mathematics" - of poverty presented in the article speaks volumes about how efficiently people like the author have been gatekeeping the conversation.

I mean, "how do you pass law school and the bar without being a fluent reader?" is a huge question, but not that much bigger than "how does a fluent reader who hates reading pass law school?"

the fact that the car you can't afford would be much better does not help you.

ok i feel better now
November 26, 2025 at 7:39 PM
You pay more to get a car now, but you get a better car! Sure, you're spending substantially more of your income on a car, but because you can't buy a car with manual windows and no air conditioning, your life is much better!

That only works when your income dwarfs the cost of the car...

I, specifically, have been yelling for over a decade about the fact - that he describes using his smart-person words so now it's a real fact - that inflation does not reflect reality at low incomes because things like cars and TVs are not factored into inflation.
