PDFs of The Between are out. I contributed some writing for this, and overjoyed to see it now in the world.

What will be your favorite room of Hargrave House?

Working on something new for Public Access, something I don't think anyone's done before: a Lost Transmission (side mystery) where you play as cats. Here's a li'l preview:

Dolls, by Yumiko Kawahara. Psychological horror short stories about plant dolls, a sort of living doll that drives obsession, entitlement, gluttony. Dark fairy tale vibes.

Still working on that Public Access mystery.

Help. I do not know how to write shameless flirts and dangerous guys.

Bored at work, so I'm gonna share some stuff for the new Public Access mystery I'm working on. Theme is still solidifying, but right now it's looking to be "Bodies".

Bluesky seems to be kicking off. Quote with one thing you’ve written everyone should read.

Right now, I'm gonna have to say "Pale Horse" in Public Access's expansion content: Skinny Jeans & Summer Screams. I've written other things since this but it still just has a lot of raw heart in it.

In a game of @montfordtales.com's Dead Letter Society set in Eberron. My last chronicle (journal) phase before the final letter has gotten spicy because Silver Flame Templars want to kill my medusa vampiress's sire (valid, tbh), but I don't think they're prepared. Who doesn't love a moody duel?

About a year ago I was getting into wuxia, long-form c-drama, and the ttrpg Hearts of Wulin. And so I preordered this, by @yilinwriter.bsky.social

Can't wait to dig in!

They really gave Andy Serkis the best monologue in Star Wars, ever, only to give Stellan Skarsgård the best monologue in Star Wars, ever, later that same ep. Andy held the title for less than 30 minutes.

1. Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman

Recommended media for the TTRPG Trophy. Not enough space for all the good things I can say about this. It hits that balance of epic and intimate that I enjoy in the stories I like to tell. It has horror and heart. It rekindled my love for reading.

2. The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu

Was on the media recommends for the TTRPG Hearts of Wulin: Silk and Steam. Reviews say the sequel is even better, so, can't wait to dig into that in 2024, because I really liked this. One of my favorite instances of lit dramatic irony (Princess Kikomi, my heart).

3. The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw

The second novella on this list. I think I am developing an enjoyment of "heartful horror", where you have all the ingredients of horror but there is a throughline of...love or care(?) in spite of the horrible things happening. Macabre. Spooky mermaid.

4. Castle in the Air by Diane Wynne Jones

The sequel to Howl's Moving Castle, yet very different from its predecessor. I have found that I enjoy sequels like this where the magic of the world needs little or no introduction. Narnia is very similar. You just get right into the conflict.

5. The Black Company by Glen Cook

Was recommended for Band of Blades, and answers the question of, "What if the villain was, like, immeasurably hot?" Real talk, the Taken and their impact on the Broken in BoB are the highlight of this book. They are powerful, frightening, and magnetic.

6. Uprooted by Naomi Novik

The Forest-as-eldritch-horror mood is obviously a vibe I jive with given how deep I've gone into the TTRPG Trophy, and the first half of this novel feels like it fits right into that world. I only wish this was the world that Novik chose to write more stories in.

7. Untethered Sky by Fonda Lee

I enjoy flying fantasy monsters and fantasy that isn't vaguely middle ages England and this novella gives me both. A poignant reminder that giant fantasy monsters are still wild animals, even when "tamed" like you see in a lot of fantasy. Heartbreaking ending.

8. A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny

Apparently a cult classic? Look I'm not great about book culture, I'm just dipping my toe in. But Neil Gaiman and his cloud of followers all sang this one's praises. Worth it. Very cute. Will reread next October. And the one after that.

9. Mortal Suns by Tanith Lee

I have been on a Tanith Lee bender since reading that she was cut from the media recommends lists for Exalted (TTRPG media recommends will be a motif in this list). I find her syntax difficult to read in a way puzzles are difficult: the final picture rewards the effort.

10. Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

YA novel re-envisioning the rise of China's first and only female Emperor, Wu Zetian. I'm a sucker for wuxia tropes and there are plenty of those to keep me happy here. Also, mecha! Pacific Rim fans, I think you'd like this one.

Top 10 books I read in 2023? Sure! Here is the🧵
While there is a sort of order to them, really on any given day each of these could be +/-2 or so.

The Between insists on 3 (but acknowledges 4 can work). The awkward hangup you're likely going to run into with 3 players in BB or The Between is vulnerable moves. It's natural for players to "pair off" during those sequences, so it'll require a little more grace to make those feel natural.
