I think I missed your post about the hedgehogs providing light. I GOTTA know, is it like in those medieval drawings where hedgehogs are stealing apples and shit by putting them on their spines? But they have little balls of light? 😭

Nothing too exciting here today, just a description of a shop in Nine Fires. I love the vibes of this city so much. I definitely went overboard in this chapter, but I don't regret it. One day, I plan to write a whole book that takes place in Nine Fires
He ventured toward the Blue District. Although the roads of Nine Fires were labyrinthine, the fires atop the nine towers served as beacons to tell Garlic which direction he had to go. The tower with the blue flame was adjacent to the one with the magenta flame, so it would not be a long walk. Garlic’s flickering forked tongue smelled the potion shops long before he saw their blue lanterns hanging beside beaded curtain entrances. The fires inside those lanterns burned candles made of wax infused with Courage. Most customers would only assume the cucumber-like scent was there to smell nice; Garlic knew it was borage meant to entice people into spending more money. His suspicions were confirmed when he saw those blue lanterns and realized the blue oilpaper was printed with images of borage flowers.

This is the end of a conversation between Shallot and Parsnips (a "married" couple) (as in, you can think of them as married, but this is a world where commoners don't get married)

Gist of the convo is "Shallot, you don't follow society, anyway..."
“Since when have you done what society told you to do, anyway?” Parsnips leaned against Shallot’s back and nibbled at her neck. “Mys Innmaster-who-dresses-like-a-man? Who got the community together to kick out that fucker of a tailor we had before Jiena? Who has a secret alchemy lab in her basement? Who’s harboring runaway slaves? If the baron told you he needed his boots licked, you’d probably rip off his leg and stick his boot in his own damn mouth.” “If only I could get away with that,” she said with a laugh. Feeling better, she took off the rest of her clothes and went to bed, clutching her dear Parsnips in her thick arms, much to his delight. Her tails perked up in shock. “But if we lose, we’ll be vulnerable.” “Even if we lose, we’ll damage Grilled’s army enough that he won’t attack us until we’re ready.” Turnip bit the bottom of her lip. “But we’ll have to rebuild ours, too. The only way to 100% tell what element a person is would be to get their DNA tested by a Mantodea. The Mantodea are a species of people who can read a person's DNA if they eat a sample. In Aloutia, babies are required to be tested by a Mantodea at hatching and parents given a report about them

Shallot and Aubergine (Iom'ren) talking about the Bond he shares with his friend. When Aubergine and his close friend escaped from the breeding facility together, they had to run in separate directions to avoid being caught. They have a psychic connection:
“At least you have your Bond so you can talk to him. Perhaps one day—” “Bond wears off over time,” Iom’ren said sadly. “I will only be able to ‘talk’ to him for a few weeks. Then I’ll feel his emotions for a month. After a year, all that will remain is a general sense of his direction. And in two years, the only thing I’ll know is whether or not he’s still alive. That shall remain until one of the Bonded individuals die.” Shallot struggled to say the next words, but they had to come out. “Like… your sister?” “Like my sister,” he confirmed. The ensuing silence was painful.

A bit of scenery worldbuilding about the Good Thyme Inn and its walls full of secrets... plus the Lightning God who singlehandedly keeps them in a pre-Industrial society
The Good Thyme Inn had secrets galore within its walls, quite literally. As technology and engineering improved across Aloutia and clockwork contraptions became the norm in the larger cities, the inn had also been renovated so its walls contained the machinery needed to power any such invention the innmaster chose to acquire. Each room had a clock, which had been Marmalade’s decision when she was innmaster. Shallot admired punctuality as much as the next person, but she wasn’t so obsessed with it that she would have ordered a clock in every room. The machinery did not generate electricity; such actions would attract the unwanted attention of Sparkato, the Lightning God, whose depravity knew no bounds and who wouldn’t think twice about throwing a lightning bolt at any mortal he thought to be harnessing his element.

Aloutia has 14 moons and a planetary ring. They're all magic in their own ways

Oh, Varesh! I don't want to forget him. He has a very specific kink: he wants to get in trouble juuust to the point where someone is about to punish him, but then be found innocent in the last second, and freed. Basically, he wants to be "almost" punished, but not actually hurt

The Lord Hierophant has every domination and sadism kink you can think of. Whipping, cutting, humiliation, burning, etc. etc. Actually, perhaps I should say any kink HE can think of. Reminder that this is a world where pee and poop don't exist so he's not into THAT, at least (he has no concept)
