Dickinsonia, back when evolution was excited to make pancakes.

Paleontologists are pretty sure Dickinsonia was an animal, a creature that lived in the sea around 550 million years ago. The flat, ripply organism adhered itself to the floor with mucus and grazed on mats of microbes. Slick. 🧪

Ooh, I like these. They look like real animals, while still being the weirdos they were.
“Oreodonts” ... On the left the somewhat hippopotamus-like Promerycochoerus, on the right the tapir-like Brachycrus.

🏺 Loved this fresco when I was a child with a Minoans fascination but it's not so much 'restored', as mostly imaginary.
Look closely, only one figure has substantial original parts, and all the heads are made up!
The real fragments however share precise costume elements with more complete frescos.
For #FrescoFriday here's a classic: 'Ladies in Blue' is a restored Minoan fresco from Knossos. The colour blue often appears on frescoes in garments worn by the elite, indicating blue was a status symbol in the Bronze Age Aegean and East Mediterranean.

An enormous thanks to Darren for sharing some of this book’s contents. It is every bit as exciting as I hoped and I simply must find my own copy eventually. If anyone happens to own one and is willing to sell or knows of one for sale, please let me know.
Ok, I dug out my copy. You're missing a treat because the art in this book, by far, is Sovak's best work. The compositions, colours and details are all way superior to those used in his other pieces. Many of the scenes are also exciting, innovative and fun, putting the animals in new situations...

I firmly believe that art- art made for kids, art for adults, keeps us sane and grounded. Making art. Seeing art. Sharing art. Make art that represents the world you wish to live in, teach art and model the kindness you want to exist in the world. Art is an act of rebellion and resistance.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.
