Do Large Language Models Produce Texts With “Human‐Like” Lexical Diversity? Evidence From Four ChatGPT Models
The degree to which large language models produce writing that is truly human-like remains unclear despite the extensive empirical attention that this question has received. The present study address...

The American Dialect Society has chosen its word of the year: slop…used as both a freestanding noun, and a productive suffix! Check out all the words we nominated at the link! And while I nominated “that’s AI” (and it won for most useful), there’s no fake news here!

It's almost time for #LSA2026! We start with the exec meeting at 8am on Thursday, then continue on with an annual weekend of excellent language science.

My talk (Is my ‘bilingual’ your ‘bilingual’? Researchers’ definitions and operationalizations of multilingual terminology) is Saturday at 2:45 😊

Check out an excellent letter from @ethankutlu.bsky.social (and written accessibly for specialists AND non-specialists) regarding how bilinguals/bilingualism are viewed through a researcher's lens. He beautifully illustrates the personal and scientific consequences of narrow "bilingual" concepts 🤩
A few weeks ago, I went to the Psychonomics conference in Denver. During the conference, I heard a researcher saying "bilinguals have a creativity disadvantage." I raised my questions after their talk, but I also wrote a letter to talk about my emotions.

NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research.

Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

I'll be presenting preliminary data from (part of) my dissertation, a preregistered scoping review of language attrition research to determine how L2 attrition/loss/decline is defined & operationalized.
We look forward to welcoming SLRF attendees to Flagstaff in 3 short weeks! If you're registered, check your email for a link to our conference Discord—and if you're not, what are you waiting for? Save your spot at sites.google.com/nau.edu/slrf...
