Hal tried to comfort her. “You’re making remarkable progress,” he said, “considering.” Bronwyn glared at him. “Considering what?” she snapped, venting her frustration at him. “Considering,” Hal repeated evenly, “that you’re learning multiple scripts at once, with no basis to begin with. You’re progressing about equally in Alven, Dwervic runes, and the Common Script all at once. Not many could manage that.”

Sam would play a fantasy RPG game, she loves reading fantasy anyway. Perhaps Baldur's Gate 3, so she could play as an elf, since in her world it's shunned.

I think Mitali should play something cozy like animal crossing, he has enough stress haha.

Bronwyn is entirely human, though as a Wizard (and later, wielder of a particular magic weapon) is treated as inhuman; how can someone so powerful be seen as ordinary?
Rehara, meanwhile, is mostly human — but her people, the Huldrafolk, are viewed by some as barbarians, or even subhuman.

And I wondered again, but I think…" To Kel’s surprise, and perhaps his own, he managed a wry chuckle. "I reckon I saw before you did that there was more to it. That she could be something for you that I never could… but I still didn’t say it to myself, not clear, until I… until I met someone else." The general noise of the pub had not diminished—if anything, it had probably increased—yet it seemed to Kel as if it had retreated into some unfathomable distance, as if walls of glass had sprung up around their little nook.

I force the smile off of my face. “Right, anything other questions?” I ask politely. Abendroth raises his hand as if he’s in a school room. “How… how are you financed?” he asks in a stuttery tone of voice. “Oh, for starters Rondu footed most of the bills. That couldn’t continue, of course, but our first job took care of that deficit. It also brought in funding and a few subsidies from the Guardian Union as well. We’re not exactly rolling in cash, but we get buy, and Rondu has even restarted his World Computer thing too.” “Funding?” Smith asks. “Our first client, Vander Ontooloo, was so happy that we managed to extract his entire family from a hostage situation without any of them being harmed that he decided to invest almost everything he had into TLC. Hell, half his family works for us now as HR managers and similar paperwork pushing people. We even have a daycare, except it’s full of down feathers,” I say with half a smirk. “Down feathers?” “Yes, they’re an avian species. Mostly birds, with feathers and beaks and everything.” Their stares are becoming comical, and I’m struggling not to laugh.

A screenshot from my draft: I held my breath, covering my mouth so no one would hear. I hoped that maybe whoever was there would go away, but the banging continued. I instinctively looked around the room for some sort of way to escape the situation. There was only one way out of the safe house and it was the same place the banging was coming from. I could try to barricade the door with nearby objects, but that would only buy me little time, not get rid of the problem. And it's not like I could lift anything super heavy to block the door. I scanned the room again, my eyes frantically darting from one corner to the other, finally deciding to slowly and carefully tip toe to the left of the door. That way I could run out the front door as soon as he came in. Running. I was at least good at that. If I had a head start, maybe he wouldn't even be able to catch me. It happened quickly. A loud crash. The door swinging open. A man with a big backpack and a rifle entering the room. Me running out of the door. I didn't even remember my legs moving, one after the other, as fast as I could possibly manage. It just happened. I was fast, not looking back, not thinking, just relying on adrenaline. He wouldn't have been able to catch up to me. I was sure of it. But he didn't need to. He fired a shot next to my legs, the sound of the gun firing instantly making me freeze in the spot. "One more step and the next one's going in your head."

Screenshot from my draft: I sat on Sam's porch, waiting for her to get ready, and took everything in — the cozy, colorful, little houses, the sprawling greenery, and the sweet smell of nature. I wasn't sure what to think when my brother first told me we were moving to Verdefield. It felt like that moment was both forever ago and only a few minutes away. Yet, here I was, enjoying this little green world, smiling and watching little blue and orange birds fly over my head. Maybe I still wasn't sure what to think, but this was nice.

I write in Obsidian but keep my manuscript on Google Docs too so I can keep track of wordcount and pagecount (and have an online backup) but wow does it get laggy with a long manuscript. My 120k (so far) draft takes ages to load on it.

Disappointingly, I’ve lost my bearings on our direction,” I responded. “The wrong direction, I know that much,” Bedlam grunted. “The waters, you can tell all of that? Begrin interjected. “We elves are as much in touch with nature as you are with Kyi. I listen, feel, and see the waters, air, and land. There is always something to pay attention to and to draw guidance from. I can’t keep my hand in the water for too long; however, their silent agony must go unanswered. They call for aid that cannot reach them.”

The day had been a crash course on questions I should have asked before accepting a new job, particularly from aliens building an intergalactic zoo. Questions such as: So, there’s some automated, high-tech way to clean the creatures’ enclosures… right? The surprising answer to this question led to yet other questions. Questions such as: But how much excrement could a hopping herd of cat-sized, mop-marshmallow-like critters produce anyway? (I really should have known better; I’d worked at a pet store, after all.) Or questions such as: Wait, there are how many of them currently crammed into small quarantine cages, because their permanent exhibits haven’t even been constructed yet? Yes, I learned much from Joe, my grumpy new boss, during my first day working at the Intergalactic Wildlife Sanctuary. Manual cage cleanup had become my first “duty” (too aptly labeled), specifically in the Earth Department, which right now solely consisted of creatures in Quarantine. But I’m jumping ahead a bit.

The room went silent as Marc walked back in. “Should I leave again so you guys can keep talking about me?” He looked accusingly from his mom, to his brother, to me, and back again. “Oh, stop being so sensitive,” Christine replied. “We’re just getting to know Bianca better. Not everything’s about you,” she added, winking at me. “Yea, okay,” Marc scoffed as he sat back down and pulled my stool closer to his. “Don’t let me stop you, then.” For the next hour or so they really did make an effort to get to know me better. We talked about how Anne and I became friends, some of our wilder nights when we were roommates, and what I’d been doing when I was living in Florida. I answered questions about my current job and my aspirations of becoming a writer. It was comforting, like space was finally being made for me. However small, it was a start, and I was grateful.

Now that she was able to get a good look at Caine for the first time when she *wasn’t* running from him, she realised that she hadn’t been imagining things – he’d changed, and not for the better. Ephraim Caine in life had been, like his brother, a tall, broad-shouldered man, but as a Turned his body had bulked up even more, his neck and arms thick with corded muscle and his once well-fitting clothes stretched tight across his shoulders and chest. His face was a mess of half-healed burns still and, judging by the dried blood caked around his nose and mouth and across the front of his ripped shirt, his current eating habits didn’t extend to cleaning up after he’d drunk his fill. And there was something else, something that she at first thought she must be imagining, because it *couldn’t* be real (though here she was looking at a Turned, and that didn’t feel real either). *‘Do you see the same as I see?’* Too complex a question for Archer’s understanding of shadow arm sign, if his facial expression was anything to go by, but he made a game attempt at deciphering it nonetheless. *‘You… eyes… seeing? Same?’* Close enough, but she needed the confirmation. *‘Look at him. Something’s wrong. Look at his eyes. Look at his face.‘* That, at least, seemed to get the message across. Or possibly Archer had just spotted the same thing she had independently. *‘What the fuck?‘* (That translation she’d taken some liberties with, but his expression very much added the swearing).

According to the investigation, the Kowellian guidance computers indicated last position coordinates do not match a known system on any galactic chart that I possess.” Rondu sounds irritated as he says this. “That is very strange,” Driona comments and furrows her brow. “Even the old Empire records?” “The current records draw from those, and they’re the ones that indicate nothing. I’m thinking there might have been an error there, hard as that is to comprehend. In any case, you’ll discover the truth when you get there,” Rondu says with finality.

Times are changing. But most of the parliament of Anka isn't that interested in more progress. Lady Penda sees an opportunity though.

The current empress of Yanipol is more reasonable, unlike her mother. But what about her daughter?
She looked around the room. Most of the attendees were men, and not too young either, like the speaker now, the elderly Inis Lazoli. "But are we sure we can gain anything from a new trade agreement with Yanipol? Isn't this all a waste of time and energy?" Hands went up. "Yanipol is a dangerous and barbaric place. We mustn't accept their proposal." "The Empress will have you beheaded if you look at her the wrong way." "Men aren't safe there. We can't risk the lives of our people." Zaiah at at her aunt Penda, who held the position of official matriarch of the Anka parliament on her own, and whispered, "They're so afraid of a country where women have more power..." "They've only ever known power for themselves..." Penda whispered back. "It's cute how afraid they are of the Empress..." Zaiah nodded. “That’s mainly because of earlier times. The current Empress Bashtia seems to be rather reasonable, unlike her bloodthirsty mother Kyrosha before her.” Zaiah had already studied the matter thoroughly before the meeting. Lady Penda responded with only a slight nod of her head. It had taken her long enough, so she stood up to speak while the men of the high families continued to argue. “Gentlemen and ladies,” she said, “while we here are once again lost in endless and fruitless discussions, we are not the only ones who are establishing new trade relations with the wider world in these new times. Nor are we the only ones who have received the same proposal for new trade relations from the imperial court in Yanipol.” Silence fell in the room, and everyone now looked at the matriarch and her official successor.
