Really you need Victor to be played by a gaunt, wild-haired twenty-something, to give a sense that he is obsessive and haunted and ambition-crazed. Not some buffed guy whose emotional range is two types of frown.

Well, that was beautifully designed, shot and lit - and you HAVE to see it in b/w - but otherwise, it's just the same story as all the other versions. Also I wasn't hugely impressed by the lead guy, but maybe it was a directorial choice to make Victor so dull and emotionless.

It is generally the case that film adaptations of 19th novels only do the first half, the half with the plot in it.
