What I'm seeing is Disney going "The Last time Star Wars was popular, Filoni was a big part of it" and continuing to fail to understand that selling a story is not like selling shoes. $10 says Star Wars continues to flounder for the next decade.

The closest thing to a defense that can be made is that when the guy looked up from his phone, he saw the car moving vaguely toward him and immediately responded with deadly force.
