We need to know what humans do before we argue that machines can do it just the same. There can’t be AI literacy without a literacy in being human: how we make meaning in work and life, distinguishing the artificial from the imaginary from the true. mail.cyberneticforests.com/human-litera...

We on the AAUP Committee on AI have been connecting with members on their concerns with technology. We’ve been developing recommendations to loosen or even refuse big tech’s hold on higher ed, for better working and learning conditions, and building solidarity around many fights tied to tech.

The report highlights "the need to establish...bottom-up shared governance to guide decisions around [AI in higher ed]" & "fostering solidaristic strategies" across higher ed, industrial sectors, civil society & grassroots organizations.

This is an excellent point. That it's possible to talk about the impact of tech as somewhat separate from whether it does what it is claimed as doing.
digital things that don’t work (on some measures) reconfigure a lot of society (adtech being a prime example) and many digital things that work astoundingly well do not… LLMs and ilk will massively rearrange things, and the link between that and their capabilities likely to be a little tenuous imo

I know many recent PhDs are clearing out their carrels/offices, or relocating to start an academic job elsewhere. If you have books you no longer want/need, consider donating them to Bluestockings. If you're in NY, you can drop them off—or mail them using Pirate Ship, which offers excellent rates.

I'm biased, but this report is a must-read for anyone looking to understand the state of AI in 2025.

It explains how AI is entrenching power for big tech and the oligarch class, speeding deregulation, dislodging human expertise and threatening workers—and how there's still time to refuse all that.
NEW REPORT: Artificial Power, our 2025 Landscape Report, is out.

Today’s AI isn’t just being used by us, it’s being used on us. We urgently need to reclaim public power over the future trajectory of AI. Another path is possible.

The library is the only place that Americans experience the fullness of what it means to remove goods from the market. It pings our consciousness. Hey we could love differently!
Internet friends, I understand if you are green with envy at me for attending this great talk last night!

"Who's afraid of libraries?" was the rhetorical opener and I loved the point (among many) that libraries are where things are free. "a CVS looks really weird after you've been to the library."
A rainy Monday night. A rusty writer/speaker. A full house. An enthusiastic discussion.

I left with a bottle of brown.

Thank you, Durham Public Library, all the Tre-yonce fans, and #LibraryFest25.
