All we have to go on is ten seconds which are muffled, soaked in echo, and partially has much louder, clearer-sounding voices talking over it.

I'm just a little hesistant to make any conclusions based on it, even seemingly very obvious ones.

Maybe it's a setup for, like, a euthanasia thing? I don't know...

(I guess maybe they could try to un-abstract a player and it goes badly forcing them to accept that the abstracted players are really gone, but...I don't know, none of them seem to hold out much hope for the abstracted players. They hold funerals for them.)

I mean, showing us that the abstracted players' corrupted but still technically living avatars still exist somewhere is a STRANGE writing choice unless they're going to come back into play somehow.
