Be careful this season! 🥣

It’s tough… For completionist’s sake, chronological releases are the way to go, but the first 5 aren’t the best sampling of what the series has to offer. There are some gems in that second 5 though, and the third & fourth 5 are where it really pops off!

They’re doing 5 at a time. Hope they have better luck than AnimEigo did with the first 4 back in the day!

Dang, thwarted by THE HUMAM CONDITION (and THE INHERITANCE).

Must admit I’ve been intimidated by The Human Condition (technically a trilogy, but often referred to as a single 9.5hr film). I should just watch it.

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi has always been a series I liked a lot and saw a lot of potential in, but I think these past several weeks it’s been totally on fire. Really coming together on all levels.

Kaala Patthar rocked! An anti-capitalist tale of redemption centered around a coal mine. Netflix’s subtitles suck but the quality of the film shines through.

And not for nothing, but the day is saved by a trucker…

Reading Legend of Kamui:

Ah yes, the touching tale of how one wolf’s cunning wit and one wolf’s brute strength compliment each other and together they can survive subtly communicates Shirato’s political message.

Then, later in the book:

Alright then, that’s more straight and to the point.

If you want to dig a little deeper he ranges from comedic oddball in AGE OF ASSASSINS (in a double role of sorts!) to menacing oddball in THE FACE OF ANOTHER. He’s always distinct and compelling no matter what you pick out from his filmography.

Nakadai is all over your Criterion jidaigeki classics. He’s the star of RAN, HARAKIRI, SWORD OF DOOM (a personal fav), the antagonist in YOJIMBO and ZATOICHI GOES TO THE FIRE FESTIVAL (another personal fav), he’s amazing in the Yuki Onna segment of KWAIDAN.

RIP Tatsuya Nakadai

One of the best to ever do it. An expert at being a wild-eyed, haunted weirdo.

Wild that I first encountered One Piece way back in the late 90s, and have been reading it consistently since the early 2000s ♥️

And of course we came away from the gift shop with quite a few items, which maybe I’ll post another time. In the meantime, here are some sad Narutos.

Found ‘im.

The walls are lined with sequences from the entire series. Here’s the first chapter of One Piece I ever saw.

Then there’s this bonus exhibit about how manga is printed, using One Piece as an example, accompanied by some videos of the printing factories. Really neat to see.

And the fine screentone / whiteout work in this piece is nuts. The way it fades up the trunk is seamless
