From RF Kuang's Babel. I think a lot about this when presenting to hearing audiences through interpreters. I do not think kuang would make a distinction between interpreting and translating in this case.

When we rented my manual wheelchair I did not imagine that I would hurt my shoulders every time I wheel.

I wanted the exercise not the misery. Looking into power scooters for teaching.

I know this is petty but I would love a small measure of prestige as a scholar of disability that other fields seem to get on social media. It feels like once disability is added, the knowledge and years of studying are devalued

Good morning it’s a great day to turn on required alt text for images and ensure that text is always contextual, and if it’s funny then it’s at least also accurate! 🫶🎈

I really appreciate that when antisemitism gets popular, often the loudest non-Jewish voices I hear are our Muslim brothers and sisters.

I hope the Jewish community takes that to heart and reciprocates when Islamophobia happens.

do you realize you're victim blaming here? I don't think that you do, but you are.

Blaming someone for how they protest injustice isn't cool, especially if it's non-violent.

If people protest at the oppressor's comfort level, then it's not really a protest, is it?

Also: if for whatever reason anyone needs help with adding alt text to an image they can just put “ALT4Me” someplace in the post and it’ll be dumped into a feed where human volunteers will add it as a reply.

This rental has four different color bulbs. Four. Different colors.

Is this a hearing thing? To ignore stuff like light temperature?

Just downed the first pills of this clinical trial I'm participating in. I want these to be my miracle drugs.

From Smilges, J. Crip Negativity, page 25. It really describes how I feel right now having been largely bed ridden for the past months. I feel sad, but cripply so.

A bunch of large accounts blocked me during my alt text pile-on. I can still see replies to those blocked posts if I follow the replyer. It kinda sucks to click a post to see what it's replying to only for BLOCKED POST to pop up.

Subverting the “gnomes are a Jewish caricature” trope by giving my little guy Yiddish first and last names, making them highly value education and strive for social justice, and giving him a sweet Slavic accent very occasionally peppered with even more Yiddish phrases

Disability is about deviance from socially expected norms. Which is why Puar among others developed the concept of debility, which focuses on the suffering aspect. Because of how suffering makes us feel J. Smilges calls it crip negativity.

Bruh, I never said that. I said your method of deconstruction, which is basically elimitivism and not amelioration, isn’t the path forward and places at risk a lot of people fir whom the categories provide ways of finding relief. I said we need to reframe the categories away from pathology.
if you are not interested in deconstructing and interrogating why “ADHD” and “autism” exists, then you’re interested in continuing ableism since pathologizing human existence is literally ableism

I'm in an adhoc group for AAAL now trying to figure out the hybrid issue now. Challenges are

1. No accessibility budget
2. No concept of accessibility beyond the ADA
3. Locked in contracts with hotels with tiered wifi access per room.
4. And many more ...

One challenge of basically losing June and July to illness is that next Jan I have to explain to the university why I wasn't as productive in my annual review.

"I didn't publish as much this year because I was trying not to die. Kthxbai"

Thinking more about Schalk's discussion of how people use ableist language to bring attention to issues. I'm specifically thinking of IEPs and how schools need to emphasize the deficit to get services. 🧪
