My Seattle suburb’s neighborhood Facebook group is doing a survey of what people think would improve the town and all the responses are like, “more parking” 😐

A weird thing about my schooling is I completely missed ever learning about the American Revolution in a classroom, so aside from what I’ve picked up from reading histories of New York and the like, stitching it all together with Burns’ doc is very fun! (Also yayyyy PBS!)

dystopian ass weather report
Chicago may experience less tear gas use as Operation Midway Blitz winds down. Cold and wet weather reduce effectiveness, while wind adds unpredictability.
Wind, cold temps can change the impact of tear gas and pepper balls, experts say

Every GD day as an historian. We are speakers for the dead.
You ever think about how we’re born knowing absolutely nothing and we have to spend literally our whole lives learning — AKA catching up on at least the outlines of what everyone who came before us either did or figured out — and if we’re lucky, we get to add a little bit to that, and then we die?

They warn you about sleep deprivation and losing your identity when you have a newborn but not about the suffocating weight of human history and the early morning meditations on our fleeting mortality
Oops! All existential crises!

I follow an Australian small biz that sells (great) breastfeeding bracelets on Instagram and they made an advocacy post about what moms *really* want for Cyber Monday & it’s wild to see what gets reached for in a society that has already met basic needs like parental leave & universal healthcare! 🫠

Being a baby has got to be so hard. The only thing you can say is “do something!!!” but it comes out “wahhhHHHHHhhh!!!” so no one knows exactly what that something is. People are always putting you in goofy outfits with animal faces on the feet. You just get set places and have to deal.

This is a really good idea (especially because many non-profit newsrooms like us over at @highlandscurrent.bsky.social have matching grants through the end of the year thanks to NewsMatch.)

Everybody come back here on Nov. 30th and recommend a news outlet that you think people should subscribe to!
This year, we’ve gotta do Subscription Sunday between Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday!!!

Great collection of articles about how wildfires could fundamentally remake vast swaths of US life

Including looks at the insurance challenges compelling relocation, the tricky ways to order evacuations & the reality that many people are stuck in place
In case you missed it — I spent my last trimester working on this package for @heatmap.news on what happens after wildfires, from rebuilding to relocating. Grateful to all the survivors, hotshots, and fire experts who spoke to me for it, and proud of what came together!

I actually worked on this project with Dan Efseaff, parks director of the town of #ParadiseCalifornla, my colIeagues at the @consbio.bsky.social and #TheNatureConservancy. The world doesn’t have to be this way, or keep burning this way. We can change it with imagination and learning collaboratively.
Aaaand finally, we have my interview with the director of the Paradise, California, Recreation and Park District who is using his limited power and funding to prevent a catastrophe from striking the town again heatmap.news/the-aftermat...
The ‘Buffer’ That Can Protect a Town from Wildfires
Paradise, California, is snatching up high-risk properties to create a defensive perimeter and prevent the town from burning again.

Think of all of the catastrophe that hit Western North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Now consider that was after the hurricane went over hundreds of miles of land first. Haiti and Jamaica are going to be, comparatively, hit straight on.

I can't speak to Jamaica, but I can speak to Haiti. Haiti is incredibly mountainous. The tallest mountain in North Carolina (referencing cause of Helene) is Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet. The tallest mountain in Haiti is Pik Lasel it is 8,793 ft
