Bit of analysis from me - a key upside from busting the manifesto pledges is meant to come in cheaper borrowing, as bond markets buy into the budget. Wesgate makes that much harder, by amplifying fears about whether Reeves/PM can stick around to implement it: www.theguardian.com/business/202...

New - I understand angry MPs this afternoon spoke to Starmer at PLP committee to ask he sack whoever was briefing against Streeting or who authorised any attacks.

He refused to say he would sack anyone or that there would be consequences.

MPs said they took this as backing McSweeney.

Something about this morning's stories reminded me of Gordon Brown's No 10. And then I remembered this passage from Damian McBride:
November 12, 2025 at 10:06 AM
My personal view is that No10 lost any perspective, assuming that it would be obvious to MPs and the general public that Streeting was mounting audacious and outrageous leadership positioning. But outside the bubble it looks like they are reacting to nothing.
Useful summary of the plot that wasn’t yet, including the mad defence that no 10 ‘needed to show they knew’ what Streeting was supposedly up to. Even if true, why would you choose to show the nation your own colleagues think you’re toast? If you need to deliver a warning why not do it privately?
Why Labour MPs believe that No 10 has only weakened Keir Starmer and strengthened Wes Streeting. www.newstatesman.com/politics/mor...

A selection of fury from Labour MPs, ministers and advisors - “This is batshit crazy” “they are f-ing deluded” “did we watch the Tories and think, let’s have a bit of that?” “why are you slagging off your main rival and then putting him on the morning round to show everyone how much better he is”

Exc - Downing Street has launched an extraordinary operation to protect Keir Starmer amid fears among the prime minister’s closest allies that he is vulnerable to a leadership challenge in the wake of the budget.

Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?
November 10, 2025 at 11:29 AM
If Keir Starmer’s election campaign was carrying a ming vase across an ice rink, then this budget – according to one minister – is like “wrestling a squirrel across a minefield”.

The squirrel is not the markets, but the PLP.

I think one of the underrated things about Mamdani is just that he looks like he’s enjoying himself - which is incredibly appealing.

It’s one of those qualities which helps a lot of the most successful politicians, from Barack Obama to Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage. Being at ease with yourself.

Lots of commentary saying that it's not clear what the point of the speech is. Seems pretty clear to me. It's pitchrolling broad based tax rises in the Budget and making sure - as Reeves did with the fiscal rule change in 2024 - that it doesn't surprise the markets on the day.
Rachel Reeves' answer to @pippacrerar.bsky.social makes it crystal clear that Reeves is headed towards breaking a manifesto pledge on tax and how she will frame it - as a necessary response to "the world as it is" when the alternative would be more cuts or borrowing.

“My job is to deal with the world as I find it, not the world as I might wish it to be” - Reeves tells the press conference.

Strategists have been saying this has been the chancellor's mantra for the last few months, when tempted to rage about the timing of the OBR's productivity downgrade.
November 4, 2025 at 8:24 AM
I was at Rachel Reeves' first speech of the election where she promised not to raise income tax, NI or VAT. She was asked the question in different ways by every journalist in the room, we could not believe she was ruling it out for the whole parliament. It seemed an extraordinary thing to do.
