But perhaps out of all the crucifixion frescoes at San Marco, it is perhaps this one which I find so moving. It’s so stark, so empty, Mary’s grief so overwhelming, St Dominic unable even to look, and that small detail of him holding the wrist of the hand clasped to him eyes. Just extraordinary.
