This is the best non-joke one-post answer so far, but the instrumental goal is to understand ALL of reality (made of atoms n'stuff that move in subtle and complex ways) in SERVICE to "social progress". If science did not advance the common wealth, it would be immoral to fund science via taxes.

I think @cstross.bsky.social's "Glasshouse" is GREAT for "alien levels of cultural acceptance". It is set in a culture that is like "what do you mean I can't be chibiform, nor a centaur, nor have five bodies???" Then it makes *a bunch of those people* become baseline humans with immutable gender!

I would have more kids if I had another $150k to throw at fertility treatments. The risk of having my soul destroyed by the grief of yet another miscarriage would be worth the possible benefits.

I tell normies to read Diamond Age (duh), and I used Juanita as a role mode (😉), And Anathem is Stephenson's actual masterpiece, partly because Fra Jad (who can't be studied too hard) is a mensch of a hero.

Interesting story! It wasn't until 6/x that "this is probably fake" occurred to me clearly. Before that it seemed hopeful. Hopeful medically. Also hopeful that any morally authoritative institutions (courts, cults, etc) might be trying to imagine *any* brightline boundaries on AI pre-emptively 😇
