November 29, 2025 at 9:12 PM
Many roads in the region are currently 100% snow and/or ice covered according to state DOTs. Tow bans presently exist in several counties too. You can receive free travel condition information from the Iowa DOT 511 app or the Iowa DOT 511 website at 511ia.org.

Most winter weather crashes tend to occur with minor snowfall amounts, not several inches. Over one-third of all winter weather crashes in Iowa have occurred with only a trace to 1 inch of snow. Nearly 75% have occurred with less than 2 inches. Drive safely!

Cool U.S. land cover map made by Milos Popovic. You can see various land uses including crops, forests and urbanized areas. Note the density of urbanized areas decreases markedly roughly west of a north-south line made by interstates 29 and 35 (interstates not shown on the map).

It is saddening to see the loss of life and property associated with Hurricane Melissa. From a purely science perspective, hurricanes are giant heat engines which redistribute the Earth’s heat imbalances. If hurricanes did not exist then something(s) even worse may exist instead.
