Post the amazing science things you have done with federal funding.
Okay, here's some of what we've learned thanks to support from my lab's current NSF project — and there's a more to come, because of course analysis and the publishing process will carry on past the end of the funding ... 🧵

The adverb "eke" may have fallen out of use, but the related verb "eke" is still alive today (almost always in combination with "out"). It originally meant 'increase, add, enlarge' but eventually came to mean 'to supplement' and then 'to make something last longer'.
‘Nickname’ is not ‘nick’ + ‘name.’
It was originally ‘ekename.’
‘Eke’ was the Middle English word for “also” or “in addition.”
Since ‘ekename’ began with a vowel, people used ‘an’ before it.
Over time, 'an ekename' became 'a nickname.'

"Specialist" and "generalist" are surprisingly slippery categories— biology abhors a binary— but quantifying the shared evolutionary history of plants eaten by insects introduced to North America let these authors predict their plant-damaging impacts
What Is a Specialist? Quantifying Host Breadth Enables Impact Prediction for Invasive Herbivores
Herbivores are commonly classified as host specialists or generalists for various purposes, yet the definitions of these terms, and their intermediates, are often imprecise and ambiguous. We…

NEW: Dems easily flipped the sheriff's office in Pennsylvania's Bucks County, a big swing county in the Philly suburbs.
So? The incumbent GOP sheriff had contracted with ICE. His Dem challenger promised to end the contract.
Now he wants other swing-state Dems to look at his victory as a lesson:

For anyone who was sleeping, major political news last night: a judge chose a new map for Utah that will deliver a seat to Democrats.
Major point in Dems’ favor that effectively neuters the GOP’s move in Missouri, much like California countered Texas.

Just now: The plaintiffs who were arguing that Utah GOP's congressional map is illegal won in court.
The judge orders one of the two maps submitted by the plaintiffs ('map 1') be used.
The ruling, if it stands, guarantees that Democrats will pick up a congressional seat in Utah next year.

This is some good political schadenfreude and then you imagine someone trying to explain it to Donald and it gets even better
"Two Republicans close to the White House told NBC News that there are growing concerns in the party that the political war is not going as planned — that the juice may not have been worth the squeeze and could, in a nightmare scenario, result in a net gain for Democrats."
Off-year election losses spark Republican concerns about redistricting
Inside the White House, however, Trump remains confident in his strategy to push new maps to insulate the Republican House majority in 2026.
