i think to understand the meaning of the birthright citizenship clause to the framers of the 14th amendment, you have to understand significance of dred scott to the civil war republican party. dred scott wasn't just a bad ruling, it was understood as a rejection of the declaration itself.

Cornell is cancelling a distinguished professor's classes on Gaza and suspending him because of the complaints of a student who previously served in Israel's military surveillance agency and was literally recording the comments of other students in class and deliberately derailing discussion.
Early last semester, Droubi said, students began approaching Cheyfitz with complaints that a graduate student in the “Gaza, Indigeneity, Resistance” class appeared to be recording them, possibly to “gather their names and comments” and intimidate them. “We believe that a student came to the course for the sole reason of surveilling and potentially harming students in the class,” Droubi said. “That ended up proving itself to be true because multiple students came forward and shared their concerns with Professor Cheyfitz.” Cheyfitz said one Palestinian student quit the class after telling him she felt upset and frightened. Current Issue Cover of October 2025 Issue October 2025 Issue According to Cheyfitz, the graduate student often steered conversations away from the assigned readings—which at that point mostly focused on definitions of genocide and international law on Indigenous rights—to defend Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza and argue with others in the class. “He clearly had not done the readings,” Cheyfitz said. “It was disruptive.” Cheyfitz said he met with the graduate student in late January and spoke to him about concerns from his classmates. During the conversation, he asked the graduate student to drop the course, and by the next class, he did, Cheyfitz said. The graduate student, Oren Renard, a PhD candidate in computer science whose identity was confirmed by other students in the class, previously served in Israel’s elite military surveillance agency, Unit 8200, according to his LinkedIn profile.

This piece has several flaws. First, the 1752 Treaty has been tested in court. It was the subject of the 1928 Sylliboy case (NS County Court) & 1985 Simon (SCC). William C Wicken wrote a book about this: The Colonization of Mi’kmaw Memory. None of this is mentioned in the article. #cdnmedia #cdnhist

I don't love using "blood libel" to describe anything other than the actual historical phenomenon of accusations against Jews of ritually killing Christian children. But if anything in modern political discourse structurally resembles a blood libel, it's Vance accusing Haitians of eating cats.

OF COURSE the loudest critics of "cancel culture" are also the loudest advocates for government censorship! That was the WHOLE POINT - to characterize private criticism or intolerance as "censorship" in order to justify the government's crackdown on that speech
Excerpt from Mary Anne Franks, Fearless Speech (2024): "Focusing on nongovernmental “censorship” turns the spotlight away from Republicans’ blatant use of state power to control speech, and the reliance on subjective reports gives pride of place to those with the thinnest skin and greatest sense of grievance—a group that happens to include a large number of conservatives who feel persecuted by nonconservative individuals and ideas. That feeling of persecution drives the hyperbolic rhetoric of the cancel-culture narrative, reinforcing the message that the shadowy left is an enemy that must be fought with force. This is in some ways the most pernicious aspect of the “thought-terminating cliché,” to use Robert Jay Lifton’s term, of cancel culture—the vilification that helps justify not only censorship of but violence against the alleged perpetrators of evil. It explains why cancel culture is a favorite topic among conservatives, from Fox News talking heads to Wall Street Journal op-ed writers to Trump."
