The Schmitt speech today is beyond reprehensible, but it’s also just such a weird moment in American politics where people like Schmitt have to reconstruct an alternate history where *they* are “Heritage Americans”. Bro you are German and Catholic the founding fathers did not want you on the team

It’s so weird that people latched onto a bunch of mostly bullshit justifications for disliking a technology that has immediate obvious negative societal externalities. It’s made it way harder to teach writing but people scream about imaginary lakes evaporating.
The commonly cited AI water usage statistics are based on a methodology where, if your data center buys green energy from a hydroelectric dam (as lots do, including the hyperscalers), then “natural evaporation of the water from the lake behind the dam” is counted as that data center’s water use.
