Valve just want a lot of devices out there with the Steam store front and centre. It’s a good plan, and I think the Steam Machine will do fine, but it’s not the end goal. It’s a niche device, but other companies could run with it.

Components are expensive, especially memory at the moment. I doubt Valve will make much money on it. The idea is surely to get SteamOS in more places and encourage other manufacturers to make similar devices also using SteamOS. The profit is never in hardware, it’s in software.

Never had much success with moonlight or steam link style options. I may get one, but people need to listen to what Valve is hinting about the price, my guess from the start has been $800.

I’m probably the target audience: a person with an out of date PC who would rather access games on a compact living room device. The main way i play games is via a docked Steam Deck.

Don’t know why people keep saying they’re hoping it will be priced in line with current consoles when Valve have repeatedly said it will be priced comparably to a similar PC build.

It’s not a mass market device like the PS5 though. They’ll be happy selling it through Steam only and happy with a few million sales, which it will achieve. It’s a step on a path, not the destination.

They said this last week, don’t know why people got so fixated on ~$500 as a price point. My guess is $800 with a new steam controller, maybe sweetened with a bundled game, perhaps the one that’s been consistently rumoured as coming out very soon.
