The Double Shift

The DC shooting story is really getting to me because we literally trained this man as a child soldier for a death squad in a forever war and Stephen Miller et al want to blame it on other cultures? It's our culture, American culture, that killed that woman.

It is truly stunning how much of American politics in recent decades boils down to parsing and reacting to the supposed politics of the latest mass shooter.

Fourteen or fifteen years ago I posted this status update, a friend combined it with an image and it went viral. It still circulates around, often with new images like this one. I think that this has less to do with the nature of the quote than the reality it describes.

It is easier to imagine ChatGPT becoming sentient and taking over the world than it is to imagine human beings coming up with a sensible response to the social and environmental destruction brought about by LLMs. Perhaps this is due to some default in our imagination.

Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea
