Blossom A haibun by Dawn Mclachlan We walked up the last hill. I knew the old man would say that it wasn’t fair horses had to risk slipping pulling that weight just for him. He need not worry, they were steady and true, tossing their plumes with admirable grace and elegance. He always loved walking that road. The stubby trees garlanding the kerb with blossom in late spring. He’d sing - “cherry pink and apple blossom white, the poets say…” as we ran and whirled around him beneath the wind blown cascade at imaginary future weddings. The trees were heavy with blossom that final day. It seemed fitting we should pass beneath them on our way. I wanted to stop and dance again, but it was far too late. A Tagged Bark Shall I compare tall skyscrapers to trees, Pavement to a woodland walk, Crowns of leaves to wafted washing on the line, Bird calls to mobile tones and talk Skitter of squirrels to patter of business shoeshine Gusted branches to snapped windscreen wipers, Fall of blossom to a passing girls intoxicating air, Gust itself to air displaced by cars and lorries, Tummelling streams to rush of sewers underground, Hearts carved in bark to graffiti tags on brick walls, Streets are forests in disguise, veins in fallen leaves An urban map, a portable satnav. Thus, romanticise an urban sprawl, a polluted world before its fall.

Teenage Riffs I was fifteen, already full of life, laughing loud, limbs quick, the world still wide and mine, but then a riff kicked in, pierced me, like the sound had been waiting for someone alive enough to catch it. It sparked me. Buzzcocks on a battered tape, a Clash lyric like a dare. I unleashed. Ripped jeans, radio static, hair razored to rebellion, vinyl sleeves spread out like maps of who I already was. We moshed in basements, sweat, spit, black nails, Doc Martens stomping out the heartbeat of the lost. We didn't want tomorrow, just the chorus, louder, louder, till the walls shook with it, and we howled it back: "No Future!" Our idols were broken angels, Poly Styrene, Howard Devoto, Siouxsie Sue, we worshipped them in stickers and patches, zipped up in leather and adolescent ache. Every track was a flare, every night a manifesto. We believed, God, we believed, that songs could save us. And maybe they did.

That 4am wide-awake anxiety is your whole body handbrake quilted catastrophe maker burning each of your footfalls Your chessboard characters stand petrified until you move them a pawn to a Sicilian Defense. We are neither gods nor mute Cassandras knowing how all this plays out. AIN’T NO CLOCKS There ain’t no clocks in Puppy Town except biological, no artificial intelligence or sweetness, no animus for others’ regrets. Ours are no hours the hands of time cannot unwind, to pee, to poop, running off leash to lap the water bowl in the next blest nap. The are no puppies in Trump’s offal office, and that’s why everything he does there is stupid, why we have no future. Audrey, the Alaskan Klee Kai puppy on my front lawn.

Zeitz Parasitic twin coughed up by Detroit, Pygmy royal seat in Mitteleuropa bodies forth the Nerves, fascia, viscera of Hel – doomed child of the Trickster Knave - Half comely maiden, half corpse mouldering, who Presides over the underworld that bears her name. But no monstrous symmetry to be found here as in the Pulchritude-to-putrefied ratio proffered by Mythology; rather, isolated nodes of Health and vitality – Schloss and Old Town Square – in an Organism otherwise riddled with necrosis. Thirty thousand souls. Dead? Lost? Sequestered in crevices and lesions of the Scabrous facades? Or cowering unseen in the Shadows, fearful that the vernal splendour of this Saturday afternoon in April will obliterate them? Processional artery linking Schloss and Old Town, Choked with exhaust fumes, Rahnestrasse airs its Moth-eaten medley ranging from Baroque to Art Nouveau: Abandoned society beauties out of some Gothic romance, still dressed in their Mouldering finery as they languish into vexed, bewitched dotage. Disgorged time capsule from that moment four decades ago when a Doddering regime paraded its moribund state in Appalling scenes of neglect, whole cities lurching into decrepitude, Swathed in corrosive fogs of blue and yellow smoke. This is an (almost) factual account of some of the conversations I overheard between the two builders who were re-roofing of my house!
You're more likely to fall off a horse than a roof Yeah mate, I suppose you're right. Clarkson said it on his tv show. He's a national treasure, dontcha know. They should make that bloke a bloody knight. Yeah mate, I suppose you're right. They are going to cut down all the trees And plant flowers instead to get more bees. I saw it on the news last night. Yeah mate, I suppose you're right. Did you see Andy scrapping in the pub with Jack? I had to keep quiet cuz of my bad back. If it wasn't for that, I'd've got in on that fight. Yeah mate, I suppose you're right. You ought to go have a look on Yahoo Loads of good stuff on there, and they've got the news too. I reckon it's a top-notch website. Yeah mate, I suppose you're right. I think being a roofer keeps you sane. The altitude lets more stuff get in your brain. I think much better when I'm working at height. Yeah mate, I suppose you're right. You'm a good listener, I like chatting to you. Our Brenda stopped listening in 2002. She says all I do is talk utter shite. Yeah mate, I suppose she's right.

Polaris I am not one star not a single flicker trembling in the night. I am three woven in orbit a trinity of light that refuses to dim. The daughter: Polaris Ab a quick and restless rhythm in the sky carrying the gravity of distant wishes. The wife: Polaris B a circling sentinel tethered by devotion balancing orbits in constant presence. The mother: Polaris Aa vast heart, burning galaxies in her chest warmth unyielding her voice a trusted compass. Together we shine not as fragments but as one beacon shining through darkness. The daughter’s spark the wife’s glow the mother’s flame I am the constellation of woman the North Star. When you lift your eyes searching for direction find me triple whole radiant.

A poem by Debbie Ross entitled, Domes Stars and Steeples text as follows From up here the churches, mosques and synagogues glint in sunlight, perfectly co-existing. Rooftop views can be deceptive. On the ground invisible barriers fracture communities. Nationalism, religion and fear keep people apart. Down in the narrow tangle of alleys and streets we found communities that mixed. A glimmer of hope in a desert of grief. A view across mostly flat rooftops - with TV aerials and shade shelters - towards the Dome of the Rock

Love the theme, as great as Fidel’s from last week!
Ben Nevis First seen from a petrol forecourt as perching on top the next block’s trading estate: it’s not a good look, this mountain’s all slouch, no poised, sky-scratching nib of summit, but a fist of dull clenched crayons, though I can just pick out its small menagerie of pepper-corn birds. There should be more aloof arrogance here for I stand at the foot of the roof of the land, yet this peak is drawn and redrawn behind net-curtain clouds: an unexpected shyness tentatively peeping back and forth.
