Excited to share the first paper from my PhD! 🥳

Media coverage reflects and shapes people's attitudes on important topics. It tells us which issues are important and how we should think about them. We reviewed >300 newspaper articles to understand how they discuss young people's social media use.

New article out on @theconversation.com on why many Autistic adults don't like puzzle pieces symbols being used to represent us:

Why the autism jigsaw puzzle piece is such a problematic symbol
To many autistic people, the puzzle piece represents stigma, exclusion and a harmful push to make them conform.

Wanted to reshare this paper I'm super proud of, on Autistic identity!

We found that external acceptance and support are critically important for developing a positive Autistic identity, which is in turn linked to better mental health. Read the full paper, for free, here: doi.org/10.1002/aur....

One of our #BeeWell headline findings for Greater Manchester this year is girls’ physical activity.🧵

1 in 3 young people in Year 10 are meeting the recommended 1 hour of physical activity per day, but this drops to 23% of girls (just less than 1 in 4), compared to 44% of boys.

The last 20 years of campaigning around mental ill-health, distress and trauma focused too little on changing the material circumstances of those who live with mental ill-health as disability. In answering the question 'what is the place of those unwell in society?' the answer is now 'marginalised'

For anyone working in adolescent mental health: I *really* recommend reading this important paper about the most commonly used questionnaires (inc SDQ)

In short: most of them have poor psychometric properties, so do we even know what they are measuring?

Fascinating critical insight into the world of adolescent mental health, social media and research methodology last night with @jadedavies.bsky.social. Voice of CYP in SM/MH research and policy must be taken seriously, especially when SM is a sphere of supportive interactions for many.

Good to see #retirement being addressed.
It’s often wrongly assumed #Autistic people don’t have #careers so this isn’t an issue. It is!
Researching autistic people’s experiences of retiring with @jadedavies.bsky.social et al encouraged me to plan & prepare discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/10...

Maybe, and just hear me out for a moment... National health / human rights / technology legislation shouldn't be based on a poorly researched pop psych book?
Labor’s Social Media Ban for kids bill is a masterclass in incompetence.

The bill tells social media companies to take ‘reasonable steps’ to determine age without ever defining what that means.

That’s not governance, that’s a dereliction of duty.

Look at some of this mess.👇
