We conclude that the media's focus on risks might exacerbate public anxiety, which could ultimately shape ineffective policies and interventions. These narratives might also increase the divide between young people and adults, making open conversations and mutual trust more difficult to foster.

Interestingly, when young people's voices were included in articles (which was rare), the coverage tended to be more balanced, covering both risks and benefits.

We found coverage has focused overwhelmingly on risks, most commonly for mental health. Almost 1 in 4 articles mentioned suicide, but these discussions often lacked care and sensitivity.

I had a wonderful time presenting preliminary findings from our study examining how UK newspapers represent young people's social media use. A full pre-print of that work is available here: osf.io/qxdyp

PS – Are Jo and I really short, or are our posters just huge😅

The key takeaway: we need to think beyond just getting more autistic people into work. It's about creating environments where people can build genuine, fulfilling careers that last. And that means proper support and truly inclusive workplaces.

Most worrying were the impacts of bad experiences. A lack of support, adjustments, and negative social experiences devastated people's confidence and mental health. Several participants had to leave work entirely after their experiences.

We also heard about how crucial good managers are. When organisations provide proper adjustments and understanding leadership, it makes a huge difference. Sadly, many workplaces still aren't meeting these needs.

The social side of work came up a lot. Good relationships with colleagues were crucial. Sadly, however, many of our participants had experienced workplace bullying which had devastating impacts.
