Fighting Police misidentification of F&DV victims as aggressors. Fmr journo, pub servant, political adviser. Community behaviour change. Horse & dog slave. Feminist fright bat. Safety isn't optional
Agree wholeheartedly. Policing is racial, gendered & deeply flawed.
But counting our "justice" chickens based on convictions is a nonsense.
Conviction comparisons are only relevant if everyone is equally legally represented in court. Outcomes are affected by who has access to lawyers

Thank you for sharing my story. So very appreciated. We know what the solutions are. We need to convince Governments to fund them

Thank you for sharing my story Sally. The effects for misidentified women are many & life changing. The Safer Ways campaign aims to promote solutions we know will work. What we do now fails on every level. Police more often than not make it worse for victims. Safer Ways are available

F&DV front line services in Vic have given up on cops. Cops make F&DV worse. They're asking for $ for experienced front line staff trained in deescalation, able to correctly identify who is primary perp, & who can provide integrated help, safety & justice, to accompany cops or replace them

Even with the best training, if staff feel they're unable to manage an incident, they have no one they can call for support or expertise except cops. We need community-based, mental health responders with skills in deescalation etc available as an option when we call 000. Cops make it worse

Its a fraught issue for staff. If they are unable to manage an incident, staff feel they have no one they can call except the cops. We need community-based, mental health responders with skills in deescalation etc available as an option when we call 000. Cops make it worse

Largest 2 crime categories in NSW are thefts & transport crimes. The 3rd biggest category is SFDV assaults. Police misidentify victims as perps & make it worse. Across Aust 1k women each week try but don't get legal help. Only 8% of sexual violence & 40% of DV survivors report. Its an epidemic

Death plus hosp admissions (7k nationally pa, doesn't count those not admitted after initial treatment or those treated by a GP/not at all), the number of recorded F&DV assaults (38k+ last year - in NSW alone!!). No of NSW DV assaults outstrip no of all other assaults. Women's safety is optional

I wondered what I'd done with that damn pin!

Tragically training NSW cops to respond to mental health calls is working as intended. If we want response by trained mental health workers, response $ need to go to orgs with people skilled to do it instead of defaulting to all the $ going to police. Cops can't be trusted to respond alone

We should be able to choose all of our food knowing it's source. Not just sushi, not just Tassie farmed (is all Australian fresh) salmon, not just fish, but all food from all sources and outlets
