What's the origin of 'soul'?
No living soul knows.
The Germanic ancestor of 'soul' can be reconstructed, but attempts to reconstruct its further origin or find cognates have only been speculative.

De wetenschap stond – surprise, surprise – na de Statenvertaling niet stil. Leuke opsomming van dierennamen in Bijbelvertalingen sinds 1637: van solham, hargol en hagab naar brokkelspecht, slagstruis en vouwvleermuis. www.rd.nl/artikel/1114...
Dierennamen kostten Bijbelvertalers heel wat hoofdbrekens
Was de vis die Jona inslikte een potvis? En gaat er een kameel of een dromedaris door het oog van de naald? Als de Statenvertalers het niet wisten, lieten ze benamingen gewoon onvertaald.

This is a sewing pattern. It is also a page from a late 14th century manuscript that is one of two primary sources for an important Icelandic saga (Sturlunga saga), but that was probably not important to the 17th century person who really needed a sewing pattern.
