Some men may have been forcibly assigned male or female at birth through surgical interventions. Others might have chosen to develop more masculine features through hormonal care. Whatever a person’s path looks like, their masculinity is theirs to own.

Some intersex variations are more common among people assigned male at birth, like hypospadias, chordee, Klinefelter Syndrome, or De la Chapelle Syndrome. Intersex men who are also transgender may have bodily differences more common in people assigned female at birth.

Most babies are assigned male or female at birth, regardless of intersex traits. Those intersex babies can grow up to identify as men or women. They can also be transgender or nonbinary, if their gender identity is different than the sex they were assigned at birth.

Although FGM is, rightly, banned in the UK, it's still acceptable for doctors to modify the bodies of intersex infants even when there is no medical need, purely to ease parental and social anxieties. This can leave people with lifelong pain and other complications.

Spencer created and translated a video about intersex people into ASL. The video covers chromosomal, reproductive & hormonal differences, and common misconceptions about intersex people. We now have accessible intersex education in ASL for the first time! bit.ly/intersex-ASL
