One of the things that really bothers me is the abstract way political pundits talk about land. Palestinian land, Israeli land, rightful land, ancestral land. What about Samaa's land? What about her house? Wouldn't they want better answers if somebody smashed up theirs?

How do you rebuild after this? Samaa wants to reclaim her place in Gaza City and build a new home. If things settle down she will likely return to her work as a teacher, but in the meantime, she needs help. gofund.me/db56c7ce3 @mommunism.bsky.social @lexialex.bsky.social @fairshare.help #SkyAid 🍉
A huge pile of rubble has accumulated in the middle of a street with a roadways cleared on either side of it, trailing off into the distance between the skeletal remains of multi-storey buildings.

I left because it became impossible to have civilised conversations without constant interruption from unhinged individuals shouting about genitals; after I left I quickly regained my follower count and, more importantly, my mental health.

I stopped doing lists of female film directors there for the much happier reason that suddenly there were lots of moderately successful ones whom non-specialists were familiar with. Sometimes things do get better. I'm sorry you went through that awfulness.

It's so successful at the horror and the romance that I always forget how funny it is. It's that rare thing - an intellectually stimulating film that's also just a blast to watch even at the end of a long, demanding week.

As an intersex person I'm here to say that some men do, and indeed, that wasn't even controversial until a few decades ago. our definitions of how sexes are categorised are constantly changing - they have to, because biology just doesn't support the myth of a neat binary.

Piers Morgan has pretended not to have heard of intersex people on several occasions.

Sir Charles Walker MP looks really offended by that milk.

Ahmad sums it up well here. Even if the ceasefire lasts, vast numbers of people are homeless, many are sick or disabled because of the war, and there's a desperate shortage of housing. Palestinians need help now as much as ever. gofund.me/69f962fc @mommunism.bsky.social @lexialex.bsky.social #Gaza 🍉

Living in a tent will not be safe for tiny Talia, or for Julia, as the stormy season worsens and Gaza moves into winter. If you can, please help Samaa to get the $800 she needs to move back to Gaza City and rent a room there. gofund.me/db56c7ce3 @mommunism.bsky.social @lexialex.bsky.social #SkyAid 🍉
A Palestinian woman cradles a baby against her shoulder and holds hands with a small girl as they stand in a rubble-strewn street beside a bus packed full of belongings.

I have to find out if it's possible to get them in Scotland in non-pickled form.

This is the first time I ever heard of cucamelons. I just looked them up and they sound really good.

My dear friend Aya has no more hope, no more strength. She has spent months watching her husband and daughter face relentless pain. Donations have all but stopped. It may be too late for her now, but for her family's sake, please help if you can. gofund.me/2f942387 @mommunism.bsky.social #SkyAid 🍉

All else aside, I'm not sure that 'just following orders' is any more legitimate as a get-out clause if (one pretends that) those orders come from a provocative third party rather than the individuals directly issuing them.
jenniekermode.bsky.social
What's going on here is that people are asking others to respect the humanity of ICE agents but what they mean is that they want them to be treated as something more than human, as inherently more deserving. Like anyone else, they ought to be judged on their actions.
jenniekermode.bsky.social
Recognising their humanity doesn't oblige anyone to be nice to them, or to pretend they're innocent or politically neutral. It does not imply that they have a free reign if they're following orders. It does not, in the end, make it unacceptable to kill them in legitimate self defence.
jenniekermode.bsky.social
Of course ICE agents are human, and their human rights should be respected, but where they are demonstrably committing crimes that does nothing to prohibit them being arrested and detained, charged with assault or terrorism or similar, or having their organisation proscribed.

When you are lost in dark waters and can no longer swim, drowning is not the only way. You can accept your loss of power and simply float, and see where the waves carry you. Perhaps that will be the end of your story. Perhaps, unexpectedly, there will be a glimmer of light.
jenniekermode.bsky.social
It is this: I have been to that place where there is no light at all. For me it was a consequence of illness, not war, but circumstances combined to leave me with no hope at all. And yet I am here. That's because when I could no longer fight, I let fate take its course; I did not decide for it.
jenniekermode.bsky.social
You have nothing to apologise for. You have fought long, and bravely. You kept trying until your strength ran out, and that is all that can be asked of anyone. I have only one thing to say to you now, and whether you heed it or not, I shall love and respect you just the same.
jenniekermode.bsky.social
Maybe so, but should we be trusting anyone over 30 to say that transitioning at a different age is a bad idea?
jenniekermode.bsky.social
Not really. On average, brains begin to decline from around the age of thirty. But in both cases we need to understand the brain as a complex organ which does a lot more than just store, rearrange and interpret information.

Nevertheless, many people are travelling north because they just feel desperate to be back in familiar places, amongst people who share their culture (which the south doesn't exactly). I worry that they're going to go back only to be attacked again.
