This is a post for about 100 people who ever lived who also did the Staten Island to Brooklyn Tech commute. Standards used to be so low, you could think that taking a ferry from St. George to BAY RIDGE was a huge time saver and still graduate

The bill stems from a yearslong legal dispute between the industry and municipalities, involving multiple lawsuits and revised legislation. Currently, the way renewable projects are taxed is largely up to localities. A longstanding state law allows wind and solar developers to apply for a 15-year exemption from property taxes, but localities can opt out, and many do: nearly two-dozen counties, at last count, and hundreds of towns and school districts. Instead, developers have typically negotiated alternative agreements with local authorities. These agreements vary widely, and the industry has long complained about the unpredictability. State lawmakers sought to address the issue in 2021, requiring wind and solar projects to be assessed using a “discounted cash flow” method. It’s a way of calculating a property’s value based on the income it’s expected to generate — one of the three common methods used to assess property taxes. The approach is favored by the industry, and for good reason, said Daniel Spitzer, a tax lawyer at the firm Hodgson Russ: Wind and solar farms bring in steady income, just like rental and other properties typically assessed using this method. But towns have generally preferred a different method that results in higher taxes, he said. (Spitzer is not a party to the ongoing lawsuit; he generally represents developers, he said, but his firm represents municipalities as well.) Some local officials feel the decision should be left to local assessors. They have twice sued the state over the law, charging that it would deprive them of millions of dollars of much-needed revenue. In both cases, courts have sided with the towns. In 2022, a judge suspended the law on procedural grounds. Legislators passed an updated law the following year to address the issue, but the towns sued again. They argued, crucially, that the state Department of Tax and Finance had overstepped when it decided key details of the tax formula. An Albany judge agreed in March, finding that lawmakers had granted agency officials too much leeway in deciding whether or not to count certain kinds of subsidies. The state appealed the ruling, and the appeals court has allowed tax officials to continue using its formula until at least February, when a judge is due to hear the case. If Hochul signs the pending bill, it will clear the “stumbling blocks” raised in litigation and finally allow the 2021 law to have its intended effect, Lasher said. Opponents would rather keep the issue in the courts. They say renewables are being singled out for special treatment, allowing large corporate developers to profit at small towns’ expense.

Being neutral here- as long as Zionism is a low-salience issue in Congress, and Israel really is just another Pakistan, the empire can continue. But the more influential Zionism becomes in the government, the more intolerable and rejected it is among the citizenry.
This is not remotely the first time that Schumer has put his own personal politics—namely, fervent Zionism (as well as a longtime reliance on Wall Street money)—above the interests of his party. Don’t take it from me, take it from him. “My job,” he told Bret Stephens back in March, “is to keep the left pro-Israel.” Probably the worst example of this came when Schumer attempted to derail President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, on behalf of Israel. He co-sponsored a Republican bill that would require congressional approval for any such deal, though it did not succeed. When then-Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to give an address denouncing the proposed deal, Schumer urged congressional Democrats to attend, warmly praised the speech, and then came out publicly against the deal, though it went through anyway. Trump subsequently killed the nuclear deal—something Schumer was less than upset about—but it should be emphasized that this was President Obama’s marquee foreign-policy goal, as well as a good bargain for both America and Iran. It was, for a few years, a vision of America that could engage in the Middle East with careful diplomacy instead of bombing and committing Thirty Years’ War–esque bloody occupations. Only Israeli hard-liners did not like the deal, so neither did Schumer. His behavior was grotesquely irresponsible.

Using playback is against Central Park’s rules. But if it sounds harmless enough, I heard a gruesome story on my visit to Hunter Island that suggests otherwise. Hoping for the perfect shot, a photographer there used playback to wake up a saw-whet owl. A barred owl in the woods responded to the recording, found the little owl, and tore it to bits in front of the photographer.
