Ijūin's operational CO tours included seven destroyers, the light cruiser #Naka and heavy cruiser #Atago, and the battleship #Kongo. The flotilla he was responsible for in May 1944 did in fact make it to Singapore; only the Iki was sunk. #NavalHistory #ImperialJapaneseNavy #IJN 3/3

Ijūin was a graduate of the 43rd class of the Naval Academy, finishing #92 out of 95. Only six others of that class attained the rank of Vice Admiral. In January 1921 he inherited his family's title as Baron; in death this passed this to his grandson before the aristocracy was outlawed in 1947. 2/3

Just to add: some naval historians and databases have Inazuma as the last of four Akatsuki-class ships; these were somewhat different from the Fubuki-class and can be considered a sub-class. I defer to the experts here. @hush-ndb.bsky.social

It seems that Inazuma liked to play bumper boats; there’s two collisions in her TROM. Bonefish sighted her in the early morning escorting a tanker in the #CelebesSea and fired 5 torpedoes, one of which hit the port side. 160 men went down with her. The wreck has not been found. #Navalhistory 3/3

#Inazuma has a colorful history befitting one of Japan’s destroyers. She is credited with rescuing some 400 sailors from #HMSExeter and 100 from #USSPope during the second battle of the #Java Sea. At the second battle for #Guadalcanal she fought aggressively, helping sink four American ships. 2/3
