Still got an eye on us though don't ya
Ijūin's operational CO tours included seven destroyers, the light cruiser #Naka and heavy cruiser #Atago, and the battleship #Kongo. The flotilla he was responsible for in May 1944 did in fact make it to Singapore; only the Iki was sunk. #NavalHistory #ImperialJapaneseNavy #IJN 3/3
Ijūin was a graduate of the 43rd class of the Naval Academy, finishing #92 out of 95. Only six others of that class attained the rank of Vice Admiral. In January 1921 he inherited his family's title as Baron; in death this passed this to his grandson before the aristocracy was outlawed in 1947. 2/3
#OTD May 24 1944 Rear Admiral Ijūin Matsuji 伊集院 松治 was killed in action when his ship, the patrol boat Iki, was torpedoed by USS Raton 150 miles west of #Borneo. #Ijūin was CO of an escort flotilla carrying #IJA troops to #Singapore from #Manila, he was posthumously promoted to Vice-Admiral. 1/3
Good-looking model of #IJN #Fuso
Visited the Maritime Museum of San Doego today, we had an absolute blast. Incredible scale models, the USS Dolphin, HMS Surprise, and SS Star of India are all well worth your time! Will be adding a #SanDiego page to #PacificHistoryGuide soon!

Today’s bit is up and it’s disaster in the Philippines in 1942.

Find out what happened when Japan blazed a trail across the Pacific…

And left complete carnage in their wake, as well as igniting one hell of a grudge in General MacArthur

ARTICLE: The Fall of the Philippines, 1942
By the middle of 1941, all across Southeast Asia, people were preparing for the possibility of war with Japan.

Katsugo “Kats” Miho was born #OTD in Kahului, Hawaiʻi in 1922. In this clip, he recalls being discharged from the Hawaii Territorial Guard solely because of his Japanese ancestry. Kats later enlisted in the 442nd RCT and participated in the liberation of Dachau.
Just to add: some naval historians and databases have Inazuma as the last of four Akatsuki-class ships; these were somewhat different from the Fubuki-class and can be considered a sub-class. I defer to the experts here. @hush-ndb.bsky.social
It seems that Inazuma liked to play bumper boats; there’s two collisions in her TROM. Bonefish sighted her in the early morning escorting a tanker in the #CelebesSea and fired 5 torpedoes, one of which hit the port side. 160 men went down with her. The wreck has not been found. #Navalhistory 3/3
#Inazuma has a colorful history befitting one of Japan’s destroyers. She is credited with rescuing some 400 sailors from #HMSExeter and 100 from #USSPope during the second battle of the #Java Sea. At the second battle for #Guadalcanal she fought aggressively, helping sink four American ships. 2/3
Today is #WarshipWednesday! #IJN Inazuma #電 was the last of 24 Fubuki-class destroyers built during the #inter-war period, and the last of four built at the #Fujinagata Shipyard in #Osaka. Laid down in March 1930, she was sunk on this day 14 May 1944 by #USSBonefish. 1/3
#OTD May 13 1905 the second of 32 #Kamikaze-class destroyers #Hatsushimo #初霜 was launched at #Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. The ship served throughout the #FirstWorldWar. Reclassified as a minesweeper in 1924, she was decommissioned in 1928. A second ship of the name was built in 1931. #NavalHistory #IJN
#Maizuru Naval Arsenal was a key piece of #IJN infrastructure throughout its existence. A trip to see the historic sites in this city is never wasted. Totally recommend beating the crowds in #Kyoto City and heading to the coast to see for yourself!
