When I studied politics in the late 1990s one of my lecturers spoke very highly of them as opening a window into what it is like to be a government minister. This did not mean that I ever actually read them.

although the article does go on to describe the only real defining characteristic of the Cagots as being descended from a Cagot, so mmmmmm.

"the only consistent aspect of the Cagots was their societal exclusion and the lack of any distinct physical or cultural traits differentiating them from the general population" - this makes me wonder if they actually existed as a community, with Cagot just being a term for someone you don't like.

I'm somewhat pessimistic about electorates, so my suspicion is that if Labour had gone into the election saying "We are going to put up taxes to improve public services" the voters would have retorted. "Put up taxes? You can shag off"
