Hi library world. If you’re in need of a remote systems librarian or someone to analyze your collection, patron traffic, census data, or other library analysis, please let me know. I’m also good at ILS training! #libraries #libraryjobs

To me, casually mentioning that you use chatGPT is like casually mentioning that you had Chick-fil-A for lunch or shop at Hobby Lobby- I will just low key mentally dismiss anything you have to say forever.

Weeding discourse - yet another topic that never seems to die. 🤦‍♀️ Why can people not accept that librarians know how to do our jobs and don’t just chuck stuff away for shits and giggles?
Opinion: “A total library would be a bibliographic nightmare, like Borges’s Library of Babel. But neither is a library a fast-fashion store. You don’t discard last season’s items because nobody wanted them.”

The first two episodes of Murderbot are on Apple TV. I am happy with how they turned out. Obviously, it’s always difficult to adapt books to shows or movies, but they’ve done well thus far. Some character thoughts below, no spoilers.

Murderbot is on! My review of the first two eps will presumably be live on Reactor tomorrow, so all I'll say now is that if you like the books or like a little dark humor with your sci-fi, then this show should be on your To-Watch list.

I’ve been looking for work for more than a year now. Thankful for my very part-time minimum wage job and the generosity of our families or we would be completely boned.

Today in technology is never neutral news
UPDATE: Responses to the Elon Musk-directed email to government employees about what work they accomplished over the past week are expected to be fed into an artificial intelligence system to determine whether those jobs are necessary or not, sources say.

I sometimes miss working in academic ILL. I loved sending out a scan or pdf and getting a ‘wow, I JUST sent this’ response.
I just got an I.L.L. chapter scan request in just 10 minutes total. Thank you @archive.org !

Yup. I've been online for 30+ years and the point I make frequently is that the version of me you see here is tuned for being online: It's me, but certain aspects of my personality are dialed up and others are dialed down, and some parts of my life don't make it online at all. Not false, just tuned.
I think I heard Hank Green in a video once say "all of whats on line is really me but NOT all of the real me is online." And I wish more people realized that about themselves and others. Its healthy to have parts of your life not online.

LinkedIn is a necessary awful while job hunting. Do you know how hard it is to keep the ai garbage and tech bros out of your feed? ‘Cause I have been searching for almost a year now and still haven’t managed it.

No company is "good", some are just less awful in public. We gotta stop valorizing corporations. Again, shop where you want. I'm just asking not to attach morality to it. You aren't Resisting by shopping at Kroger.

The response to this picture has been 99% "cool" and 1% panicked mini-machos attempting the dude-to-dude version of negging, which is working as well as you might think. A lovely way to find out who needs to be blocked here on the Sky. in that respect I am certainly getting value from this shirt.

Fred Rogers does seem to have been a genuinely decent human being and also he would probably be the first to tell you not to idolize him, but to find in yourself what is beautiful and special and hold that up to the light so that you can see it clearly, and can everyone else.
Is it okay if I still idolize Mister Rogers?

I would prefer not to spend my own "masculine energy" on being a craven suckmonkey to a shambling pile of felonies and grievances, but maybe Zuckerberg's masculine energy comes with a side of humiliation fetish, that's not something a $200 billion net worth can change, some dudes just like groveling
Never has masculinity appeared so weak.

I’ve had customers apologize to me at the bookstore because ‘they don’t buy a lot of books and are normally library people’ or share similar sentiments. Don’t apologize for that, I am too. Bookstores and libraries aren’t competitors.

A bookstore is the least awful form of retail that I can imagine, but I miss my libraries. It’s hard to adjust to a ‘sell things’ mentality after so long in libraries.

The famous green owl app Duolingo is going even harder into AI made by stolen content. It's not curated by native speakers so you have no idea if what you're learning is correct. Their algorithm overall tries to hit the happy brain juices instead of helping you learn. So here are some alternatives!

The stress and chaos of job hunting plus the stress of the holidays and a last-minute retail job put my tabletop roleplaying game hobby on hold. Even when I was off on our scheduled night, I just didn’t have the capacity for it. Looking forward to having some game nights again.
