seems like a lot of the friction experienced in looking back at artist personas with "aged" designs is downstream of the (neutral, and personally I have fun subscribing to it) modern internet idea that, when making an avatar, you consciously engage in character design beyond personal representation

admittedly a surface level scratch unto surface level surfaces, but one identifiable change over the years seems to be that online personas (fursona and otherwise, but delineating an avatar character rather than a distinctive Character For Something) are more design-forward than ever
