Biking to the metro without having to worry about theft. Going for a run and biking back. Walking somewhere, it starts to rain, then hopping on a bike to arrive faster.

Bike share *completely* changed my mobility.

I can take a bike anywhere with zero cost for each ride ($20 monthly membership).
Shared mobility is changing how we move in cities.

Vélib’ recorded 48 million trips in Paris last year. More and more cities now offer shared bikes. This makes cycling an convenient and flexible choice for many living and working in the city.

Does your city have a bike share program?

Chow flop.

She won many votes from cyclists and biked to work her first day in office, but that’s all performative if we’re dropping the cycling infra budget by $175M!!!

Email her and your councillor demanding at least keeping cycling investments steady, not a $175M downgrade.
Toronto is proposing $132.5M over 10 years for cycling infrastructure.

That's down from $175M in last year's budget and $289M (!!) in 2024.

Meanwhile Montreal is planning to spend $473.5M.

Cities make choices.

Vancouver’s West End is the densest neighbourhood in Canada. Its mix of housing includes lots of apartment towers.

I highly recommend anyone who thinks tall buildings ruin neighbourhoods to visit. It really is a nice experience.

Two measurements I cannot accept:

1. Americans using ounces for liquid
2. Brits using stones for weight

(As much as I wish it was a joke, it is in fact not one and this is exactly how it works here)

A new poll shows Mayor Olivia Chow and former mayor John Tory would be locked in a tight race if they both run in the municipal election next year, with Chow maintaining a small lead.

Transit Signal Priority on ion Light Rail, Region of Waterloo, Ontario (2019).

Trains use a horizontal (stop) or vertical (go) white aspect bar, instead of red or green.

The trains follow a wave and do not stop between stations.

Learned some illuminating things about Line 6 from City/TTC staff at today’s board meeting that’s worth sharing:

1. Current run time on the Finch LRT is around 56 minutes end to end.

Ughhh TTC board is being so dodgy on talking openly about signal priority

Matlow is pushing for transparency and they keep saying no we’ll talk about it “in camera” (closed private session)

They say it’s to “preserve their relationship with metrolinx”

In response to Ontario’s legislation banning bike lanes that remove car lanes, Toronto is trying to find space for new bike lanes by narrowing (rather than removing) car lanes.

I feel for any active transportation professionals in Ontario right now, having to work around this boneheaded law.

If you go to a suburban mall, you will probably have to park outside and walk in. You don’t expect to drive in to your store.

But for some reason in urban areas it’s considered an injustice if you can’t park directly in front of the store you want to go to.
