💯 For me this parallels 'the simplicity on the far side of complexity' quote. Creating & facilitating informed comfort is an art, skill, science &more. Had a student tell me this week she signed up for my Women's Studies class hoping to find space less traumatizing than her other courses & the world
Was talking to a friend about how artists have spent years warning about the arrival of the current moment, and how he personally feels like making a shift towards creating work that can comfort and maybe galvanise people right now. No need to sound the alarm anymore - the dystopia is already here.

On this day, the hallowed birthday of COMMON SENSE, by Thomas Paine, I present to you some lesser known quotations (and some blockbusters) -- to help us understand what he hated about kings, and what he loved about the people.

“It is not in numbers, but in unity, that our great strength lies.”

Hmm. Some World Cup warm-ups will be nearby in late March… Croatia v. Colombia & Brazil. Let’s watch how “dynamic” this pricing is.

Extended lunch break today in an effort not to succumb to syllabi/Ed Tech overload.

Let’s take extra good care this year teacher/academic friends. ✨

Hour walk in the park + 45 min. at county pool. High of 79F today - have to make Florida teaching advantages where we find them.

Football/soccer second to none really for sport-culture-politics
Throughout their win vs Botswana at AFCON, a DR Congo supporter replicated the stance of Patrice Lumumba, a key figure in African and Congolese independence who was assassinated in 1961 following a joint plot between political opponents, Belgium, the US, and UK 🇨🇩

Our glorious distant past. Lots of home/yard work this break & moving on to some New Year’s deep cleaning now. Note the issue date, not as old as one might expect maybe? Location was near one of our campuses. I must have needed something for a class as 2007-08 was when I started teaching there.

I've got to be honest, we may as well call it a night #DuvetKnowItsChristmas
I’m entering The Teenager as potential winner of #Duvetknowitschristmas

He’s had to move from his bedroom to the unconverted attic

Cardboard floor & headboard is a nice touch which I’m sure he appreciates

He think it looks like he’s living in a meth den

One of the best digital traditions of the season, commencing now in the UK and continuing through the evening across time zones. #DuvetKnowItsChristmas
This is the 15th year of #DuvetKnowItsChristmas, which is preposterous. Rules: if you find yourself dealing with unusual / claustrophobic / gaudy sleeping arrangements this Christmas Eve, share a picture with the world. Use the hashtag (with capitalisation) and cc me if you can be bothered.

More than one holiday shopping email I’ve received this week has included items clearly meant as Valentine’s Day gifts? Bring back seasons please and thank you.

Going through student responses to a survey I gave all my classes this year (still in process) & one item jumps out right away: 71.4% of enrolled students said they prefer to read books in print (n=329) In addition to pushing back on AI/LLMs, feel it’s time to renew push back on ebooks for reading

A minivan. Decorated on all sides with Christmas light decals. Parked diagonally across 2 spaces. On the same row as an oversized luxury SUV also taking up 2 spaces. I’m just out for a post-grading lunch & it’s not peak holiday chaos yet but too many people seem off their moorings. (Some literally.)

Amazing tournament run by FSU & great goalkeeping performance to get by the No.1 seed Stanford.

5th National Championship for my undergrad school - which did not have NCAA women’s soccer at the time (!)
Florida State 1–0 Stanford

Hudson's goal in the 87th minute stands and Florida State wins its fifth NCAA DI Women's Soccer National Championship.

One of the long-serving group leaders of our UU study group brought several original early 19th c pamphlets from his own collection for our Spirituality & Reform discussion this evening. Remarkable how their debates on criminal justice reform, anti-poverty & anti-war remain resonant.

Thanks to my students for a great day yesterday as we wound down a truly exhausting semester - one class guessed my age as 5 yrs younger than what I am (!), another said they appreciated my “work ethic” With our profession under attack it has been harder to gauge what’s going well. Grateful for them

I've probably only bought a couple holiday trees in my adult life. Have a new screened porch and feeling vaguely positive after travel, so I thought, well, what do trees cost nowadays? My word. I don't recognize this world. Any tree $$ I briefly considered will go into refreshing my herb garden.

Managed a 12-hr conference day at #NWSA yesterday, so this little introvert earned a morning beach trip. Perhaps not the best in PR but a nice public beach only a mile via shuttle from conference hotel; even managed to walk back across the inlet bridges.
