I was meant to post this a month ago but things got away from me a bit... I've just released a new Patreon episode talking about the pou that Banks/Tupaia got in Tolaga Bay in 1769!

Somehow it ended up in Germany, but how? Sign up for $5 or more to find out!

It’s the man himself! Charles Speight!
Here he is in the programme!
November 17, 2025 at 12:34 AM
If you remember back to our Speight’s episodes, we talked a bit about this in HANZ! IIRC (it has been 3 years for me lol) Charles Speight was heavily involved in the organisation of the exhibition
Today, it's exactly one hundred years since the opening ceremony of the New Zealand & South Seas International Exhibition in Dunedin.

To celebrate, I'm sharing some images from an original copy of the ceremony's official souvenir programme.

While we are on the topic of Watson and how he stole the credit from Rosamund Franklin, I think it's only fair to fess up that the guy who showed Watson the photo Franklin made was (potentially) Maurice Wilkins, a New Zealander. He possibly did so without her consent.
November 8, 2025 at 5:38 AM
I’ve met/listened to a couple people who met Watson while I was at uni. What struck me about their stories of him is that they both were virtually identical in how they described him as a massive asshole

Today, 144 years ago, 1600 Crown troops invaded a pacifist settlement that was the centre of resistance against British colonialism. The leaders were arrested, the settlement sacked, the people violated.

For many in Aotearoa, November 5th is Parihaka Day, or Te Rā o te Pāhua: The Day of Plunder.

New Episode! Cook continues to explore Te Ika a Māui, attempting to trade with Māori, getting into arguments with this crew and probably going blind by looking at the sun too much.

This Labour Day, Aotearoa, try to live up to the dignified and respectable example of those worthy workers who first banded together in 1840 and politely requested to work only an 8-hour day.

Then threw anyone who crossed the line into the harbour

Labour Day, a public holiday in New Zealand since 1900, is a suitable occasion to pay tribute to Samuel Parnell, who achieved fame as the founder of the eight-hour working day in New Zealand.
